For a change the wind wasn’t a factor in the bike ride. Nice way to end May biking as I rode the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route for 33.16 miles. May riding totaled 877.63 miles, the most miles in a month since August 2018. I am on track to bike 200+ miles this week with 182.79 miles so far and Saturday to go. I started biking at 11:13 AM and finished at 1:47 PM.
Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (75% humidity), overcast, wind variable 4 mph. Finish 93 (57% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind calm. With the temperature above 90 my choice of clothing was comfortable: shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves.
As I rode through Tavola the colorful flowers caught my eye.
I altered the route to go around the construction zone on the I-69/US59 north bound frontage road at Community Drive. The work on the Grand Parkway overpass has the frontage road down to one lane so I moved to Loop 494 which was not affected as much. Not sure how long this will last so rides to the north will need to move to Loop 494.

Austin is suppose to be a "Golden Bike City" yet there are really no loops or even contiguous paved trails for road bikers. It seems to me after looking at the map and the City of Austin Transportation plan of 2014 that there are no plans to tie anything together that forms any trip longer than a few miles?? This is why i’m posting to ask If anyone knows of …

The forecasted rain produced .02″ at my home and this did not inhibit my going for a bike ride at 11:25 AM. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and rode 32.85 miles bumping my May total to 844.47 miles, the highest month total since August 2018.
Weather during the bike ride: start 85 (74% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph gusts 16 mph. Finish 89 (65% humidity), overcast, wind N13 mph. I wore shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. As I made my way back to Kingwood the sky to the south contained some dark gray clouds and when I got home and checked the weather radar the front that went through this morning looks like it is coming back to the north.
The wind was strong enough to keep my tired legs from powering me fast enough to get my average speed up to 14 mph. Once I got on FM 1960 and rode west the wind wasn’t a problem and I got up to 16 mph.
Recently I altered this route by riding on Wild Violet Drive instead of Harvest Glen Drive in Atascocita. The county is building a hike and bike trail along the drainage bayou and today I stopped and took these photos.
The fancy benches with the trail name cut into the back call this the Atascocita Hike and Bike. I thought it strange that there is no entrance where I took the photos. On a ride in the future I will get on the trail and see where it goes.
Kingwood High School let out early and my ride along Kingwood Drive on the way to Atascocita was among the students walking to the east. They were friendly and allowed me to pass once they noticed me.
I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for ice and water. Walking inside the store the new owners have changed the layout with the cashier now behind thick glass and a different color on the walls. This is the first time I stopped in many months.
The ride back to Kingwood had a good pace and I finished the ride at 2:05 PM. Strava told me “This was easier than your usual effort.”
Friday’s weather might include rain but it will be scattered and biking the last day of May looks possible.

We’re scheduling an extra Urban Challenge this month since we missed the last couple of months. This time we’ll be starting at Regina’s house, 4029 Nenana, which is south of the South Loop and west of Stella Link. The weather might have a bearing on our direction of travel and distance, but we usually ride between 35 and 40 miles with at least one stop for breakfast and one for refreshments. This is a fun way to see parts of Houston that you may never see or know about otherwise.

May was a mixed bag for my riding. I was sick for almost two weeks and it’s been raining a lot. Lots of rain brings storm watching which I enjoy but also means I haven’t ridden on the dirt in probably a month. I had a great ride yesterday where I smiled the …
