Video: Community organization ‘Walkable Nacogdoches’ advocates for active transportation in the city

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) – A Nacogdoches citizen group is advocating for pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure and safety.

“We’re trying to make a complete street for everyone, that’s protecting everyone. Everyone can get where they’re going the safest way possible,” said organizer Grace Garrigan, organizer of Walkable Nacogdoches.

Garrigan and her husband walk or ride their bikes to take their daughter to school every day.

“We run into a lot of scary situations even though I would say we live in the most walkable parts of town,” she said.

Garrigan explained the group’s mission is to help identify the need for sidewalks and cycling safety within the city. …

Groups to host bike tour of Austin Saturday

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Two Austin groups are inviting everyone to enjoy the best that the city of Austin has to offer as spring kicks off.

The Downtown Austin Alliance and Ride Bikes Austin will host the 2024 Arts & Parks Tour on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

The four-hour tour begins and ends at Republic Square.

DAA said the first 100 people to register will get a 2024 Art & Parks hat and the first 200 to sign in on Saturday will get a free commemorative ride shirt.

According to DAA, you can bike the full tour on your own or walk a similar tour. …

Registration opens for FMPD’s Bike with the Blue

Registration for the Flower Mound Police Department’s third annual Bike with the Blue event is now open, the town announced recently.

Register before March 22 to get early bird registration rates. Bike with the Blue is a fundraiser event hosted by FMPD, Flower Mound Police Association and the FMCPAAA. The event on May 4 from 7 to 10:45 a.m. at Lakeside DFW will include a 5K run, five-mile civilian bicycle race, a youth “Bike with the Blue” ride with sworn police cyclists from across DFW, and end with an eight-mile police bike race.

This year, the town is adding in a Star Wars theme since the event is on May the 4th. Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite Star Wars character and compete in the costume contest. To learn more and register for the family-friendly event, visit www.flower-mound.com/bikewiththeblue.

Pine Pollen, Light Rain, 24 mph Gusts. New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst

Pine pollen is turning the road a yellow green and when the bike tires get damp they turn the same color. The streets were damp when I started today’s bike ride at 11:43 AM from an earlier light rain. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike heading north on the New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst route for the second time this year. As I rode through Hunters Ridge Village, Elm Grove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, and Woodridge Forest I wondered if I would make it to Roman Forest Blvd. because of the patches of light rain I went through. When I reached Brooklyn Trails the clouds behind turned lighter and I didn’t ride in any more rain. The SE wind increased from 13 mph to 14 mph with 24 mph gusts during the ride until I finished at 2:23 PM. That explained the hard pedaling on the way back to Kingwood. It was warm enough for a long sleeve poly T-shirt under a short sleeve jersey. I rode twice on the Strava KPHS sprint segment to build up my Local Legend stats. For some reason this segment is near and dear to me. I have other Strava Local Legend segments that I don’t ride extra times.

I haven’t included the AXS SRAM Ride Report link for awhile.

Weather: Start 77 degrees, humidity 80%, dew point 70.6, overcast, wind SE 13 mph; Finish 80 degrees, humidity 74%, dew point 70.9, mostly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph gusts 24 mph.

Graham Warren Clarke II obituary, 1940-2024, Dallas, TX

Jan. 14, 1940-Feb. 20, 2024 Graham Warren Clarke II passed away on February 20, 2024, at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas of complications due to heart failure. He was born in Berea, Ohio to Blanche Ethel Apsey and Warren Olsaver Clarke on January 14, 1940. In 1943 the family moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana where his father worked in the wartime chemical industry. The family moved to Orange, Texas where he graduated in 1958 from Lutcher Stark High School. He then attended North Texas State University, receiving his Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance in 1962. Due to his academic and musical accomplishments, Graham received the prestigious Presser Scholarship Award at the end of his junior year. Later that year, he enlisted in the military where he served in the United States Army Security Agency as a specialist in communication intelligence. He was stationed at the Clark Air Base in the Philippines, decoding wartime North Vietnamese wire traffic. He then began his teaching career at Gainesville, Texas Middle School. In 1970 Graham completed his master’s in music with minors in Music Theory and English, again at NTSU. …

… He developed a passion for cycling after a particular visit to his doctor who recommended an exercise program due to a congenital heart defect. Graham began biking vigorously on and off road. He joined the League of American Bicyclists and enjoyed participating in biking tours throughout the United States. …

Bicyclist struck, killed along MLK Pkwy in Beaumont Saturday evening

The man’s name will not be released until police have notified his immediate family.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A Beaumont bicyclist was killed Saturday evening after being struck by a vehicle on M L King Jr. Pkwy.

The man was riding a bicycle west on Crockett St. and as he was riding across M L King Jr. Pkwy he was struck by a 2003 GMC headed south on MLK according to a news release from Beaumont Police.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene according to police.

Afternoon bike ride on my Lynskey Helix following the Kingwood – Forest Cove – San Jacinto Bayou Greenway route which is not always the same streets. Started at 1:35 PM and finished at 3:33 PM. This was the fourth ride on this route and longest distance at 25.17 miles. The warmer weather was nice. Spring plants are starting to bloom especially the azaleas. Closed out the week with 142.98 miles and 83 miles towards March’s road miles goal of 680. No flats today. I reclaimed the Strava Local Legend on KPHS Sprint (54s) by riding it twice today.
