Bike to Work Day ATX 2024 – Austin – Ghisallo Cycling Initiative

National Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 17th, 2024! This year’s Bike to Work Day will include over 40 fueling stations around Austin. Fueling stations will operate from 7 AM – 9 AM and give out a variety of free treats like coffee, tacos, waffles, snacks, and complimentary bike tune-ups for commuters. The morning will conclude with a celebration at City Hall featuring bike-friendly vendors passing out goodies and special guest speakers.

Biking is a great way to get where one needs to go, while connecting with our environment, community, nature, and also boosting mental and physical health. Biking has also been shown to reduce stress and reduce air pollution. Although “work” is in the name, you don’t have to be on your way to work to actually participate. Just get out on a bike! Cyclist killed after getting hit by several vehicles near Houston Museum District

HOUSTON – A bicyclist was killed Monday night after authorities say he managed to avoid getting hit by an 18-wheeler but was hit by several other vehicles on the 288 Fwy near the Museum District. It happened around 9:30 p.m. when police say a man on a bicycle tried crossing the main lanes of Hwy 288 and Calumet St.

Witnesses told police when an 18-wheeler almost hit him, but he was able to swerve on his bicycle but fell off. He tried getting up, investigators say, but that’s when he was hit by three other cars. …

MSU Cycling with 1-2-3 finish in conference

The Midwestern State University Cycling Team won the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference Championship held in Wichita Falls April 13-14.

MSU Texas was paced by Pavle Kalaba, Dušan Kalaba, and Carlos Maldonado, who took first, second, and third individually in the Men’s A Division. Texas A&M was second behind MSU in the team standings, and Texas State earned third.

Molly Hayes, a freshman at MSU Texas, raced to a first-place finish in the Women’s A Division to qualify for nationals. Brittany Bailey of MSU was second in Women’s B, and Jacelyn Reno was second in Women’s C. Joaquin Traslosheros earned first in Men’s B.

Bike to UT Day celebrates student cyclists’ contributions to more sustainable University

The University Parking and Transportation Services Department held Bike to UT Day on Tuesday to promote cycling and celebrate cyclists’ contribution to campus by reducing pollution and traffic congestion.

Students had the opportunity to connect with local advocacy groups to gain awareness about resources and city-wide initiatives. Safe Streets Austin, a group advocating for the creation of protected bike lanes across the city, attended the event.

Stirred The Streets Up Riding Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive

I’m using a route name, Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive, for today’s bike ride but I changed some of the streets for variety and maybe add a little distance to the bike ride. The bike ride started a little earlier than yesterday rolling away at 10:30 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. The overcast sky plus sunglasses made it seem darker than it really was. I wanted to get an extra mile or two toward my April road mile goal of 799 miles. I missed a few days this month and I am just keeping up with the daily mileage and not getting ahead. Today’s 37.33 mile ride moved my April total to 433 miles, just a few miles above the pace I need. This was the 8th ride on this route in 2024 and the longest distance by a mile or so. Adventure Cycling Association Big Bend Ride – Presidio to Marfa 4/7/2024

Sunday, April 7th, arrived too early. We were up before 6 AM to meet at the Oasis Restaurant for coffee and breakfast burritos to fuel the 58.5 miles from Presidio to Marfa. The leaders gave the group an option: ride the 58.5 miles or take the van to Shafter a little over 19 miles into the ride to avoid traffic on US67, a major road north. All but two opted for the Shafter start point. Jeff and Rob wanted to ride the whole way. Everyone brought their bags and bikes to the van, bags inside the trailer (the 2 tandems as well) and the bikes on top of the van. The temperature in Presidio was in the low 50’s and I dressed for that.

The van and trailer pulled away from the 3 Palms Motel about 7:30 AM with sunrise about to happen. The drive to Shafter went quickly. There was a place for the van/trailer to park off the highway. The bikes were handed down from the roof and the 2 tandems removed from the trailer. The temperature was much cooler at Shafter and a number of people layered up before heading. I changed jackets and added leg warmers.

I thought I was prepared and the road was flat to gently rising for about a mile and then a steep climb appeared. I rode up part way but had to walk to the top. I rode to 5.3 miles with Evan behind me. The route was going uphill for several miles and my legs were struggling. I called Gary in the van and arranged to meet him at a spot where he could pull of with the trailer. I rode in the van to the top of the last big climb leaving about 21 miles to ride to Marfa. For the first time I arrived at the El Comisco RV park before any of the other riders, thanks to the van ride.

Other riders arrived not long after me. I set up the orange wind sail tent, rested and then went to the free showers. Refreshed after the shower I sat with several others talking. Sunday evening there would no camp cooking. Instead the group was going to The Hotel Paisano for dinner. While we waited for our tables we gathered on the patio for Gary and Evan to pass out awards for each rider in the group including them. We laughed at what they found for rewards and the story behind selecting the award for each rider. I got an air horn. I’m not remembering why I got the air horn.

Our tables were ready and we moved to the dining room area. The menu was concise and I ordered tortilla crusted chicken with mashed potatoes, and asparagus. The meal was very good and I ordered cheese cake for desert.

Back at El Cmisco RV park the sun was down and we went to our tents. This was the last night in the tents. I told Buzz and Beth I was considering just leaving my tent in the morning because of all the trouble I had setting it up and tearing it down. But in the morning I folded it up and took it with me.

Adventure Cycling Association Big Bend Tour – Terlingua to Persidio

Today, April 6th, there was a carrot and stick for the ride. The carrot was tonight we sleep in a motel in Persidio. The stick, to get there the road goes up that 15% climb I mentioned yesterday. I opted to ride in the van with Evan over that 15% climb to a rest stop about 27.1 miles into the ride. The van ride after Lajita was steep even in the van with the trailer. The total route was 57.5 miles. I rode 30.46 miles from the place Evan stopped. He was going to wait there to give water and supplies to the rest of the group. On the way to there we stopped at a store in Lajita where the mayor, a goat, watched everyone come by.

For some reason my GoPro Hero 9 did not record audio for the video so my usual banter is not there.

Traffic was light as I rode to Persidio over a some climbs but nothing approaching that 15% one. I stopped at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Redmond for lunch and rest. I think that was a little more than 14 miles leaving about 16 miles to the carrot, 3 Palms Motel. The Persidio city marker arrived but it was still a couple of miles before I started seeing buildings. Once in the town I made several turns to get to 3 Palms. Jeff and Mitch were there sitting under the carport with Evan. The van and trailer were parked across the from there. I cooled down for awhile and then went to my room (Jeff was my roommate but had not arrived yet), hauled my 2 bags upstairs, and took a shower.

We all gathered around 6 PM to go eat at the Oasis Restaurant next door to the motel. It was nice to not have camp cooking. Or setup my tent. The mattress looked and felt much softer than the rocks at Rancho Topanga. After a long dinner we all went back to the motel to sleep.
