Rode north on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike following the Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood route. Utilized a light tailwind getting to SH 242 and then my legs struggled to power me back into the headwind. I took a break under TX99 sitting in the shade and enjoying the breeze. I had to tell myself 3 or 4 times to get up and finish the ride. I last rode this route on May 1st though another ride on a different route followed most of the same streets to SH 242 and then continued on SH 242 to Old Houston Road. I biked 37.86 miles cutting the miles I need to reach my goal to 45.9 (goal for June is 908).
Weather: Start 87 degrees, humidity 77%, dew point 78.8, partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph; @ TX99 90 degrees, humidity 63%, partly cloudy, wind W 7 mph; Finish 90 degrees, humidity 65%, dew point 77.1, partly cloudy, wind W 9 mph.
The Bicycle Advisory Council is calling on the city to protect ghost bike installations after a cycling safety group reported four bikes they put up in the last few months were removed.
Volunteers with the Austin Ghost Bike Project (AGBP) have placed at least 10 ghost bikes — painted white and attached to a nearby sign or post — at locations where bicyclists have been killed by motorists to memorialize them and remind motorists to drive safely. But in recent months, a few of the ghost bikes have been removed with no explanation given, though members believe the removals are likely from maintenance and construction crews.
“We are constantly looking for ways to remind people of the toll of traffic violence, and I …
LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – Investigators are searching for the driver in a fatal Lufkin hit-and-run involving a cyclist on June 7.
According to a release from Crime Stoppers, the cyclist, later identified as Darryl Thorton, was struck around 10:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of North Timberland Drive. Thorton was in the outside northbound lane near the railroad crossing, the post said, and was hit from behind.
The driver fled and Thorton was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the post, the vehicle likely has damage to the front end after the crash, and possibly has blue paint from the bicycle as well. There may be damage to the hood and windshield as well.
Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for the first, most accurate, anonymous tip that helps solve the case. Tips are accepted only at 639TIPS.com, through Crime Stoppers’ app (639TIPS.com/app) and, through calls to (936) 639-TIPS.
MCGREGOR, Texas (KWTX) – A Central Texas boy who had his bike stolen wasn’t without wheels for long after a stranger saw his mom’s post on social media and surprised the 8-year-old with a new bicycle.
Landyn Swaim, of McGregor, was heartbroken when he walked out of his friend’s house where he was playing only to discover someone had stolen his bike.
The incoming fourth grader at McGregor Elementary rides his bike every day. He rides it so much, his mom, Paige Harrison said, it no longer had breaks and Landyn used his feet to slow down.
Paige aired her frustration on social media with thieves.
“Some people can be scum of the earth,” she posted on the McGregor Texas Neighbors Facebook page. “I could cry. I’m upset. My …
As the A-Team use to say, “I love it when a plan comes together!” My planned route held no surprises on the bike ride. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike on the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. Started at 9:25 AM and finished at 12:17 PM. Weather: Start 86 degrees, humidity 79%, dew point 78.5, cloud cover 44%, wind S 6 mph; Finish 91 degrees, humidity 67%, dew point 78.9, partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. I finished before the hottest time of the day but that didn’t mean no sweating. Getting closer to my June goal of 908 miles with today’s 36.44 brought me to within 83.8 miles. With 5 days left it looks good.
Sushi is the spoils of victory in an eccentric bike race across the West Texas desert
The conditions must be perfect: It has to take place during the hottest part of the year, the moon needs to be full to aid with visibility, and, most importantly, it cannot be a weekday. When all of these circumstances are met, then, and only then, do the residents of Marfa rally to shoulder the burdensome task of bringing sushi to their small West Texas town.
To be more specific, it’s not exactly sushi—it’s sashimi. And if we’re nitpicking, it’s not even in Marfa proper. It’s precisely 31.07 miles outside the city center.
For Marfa’s annual Full Moon Sushi Ride, which typically takes place during the first weekend of …
