Yesterday, in historic Bonham, Texas, I did my 20th bike rally of the year and my 416th overall. I’ve been going to Bonham since 1990. I missed two rallies during that time (one because of a conflict with the Waco rally), so yesterday’s Autumn in Bonham was my 16th in the past 18 years. It’s a long drive (96.8 miles) to Bonham, but well worth it.

The Erwin Park mountain bike trail will remain open until an alternate site is selected as the city looks at the park’s future.
Planners and architects of the MESA Design Group of Dallas will present the master plan they have created for the 214-acre park to McKinney City Council at a meeting tentatively scheduled for Oct. 15.
The council has the ultimate authority to direct staff on what to implement from the master plan and whether or not the mountain bike trail will remain at the park. MESA staff recommended the city look at alternative sites for the Dallas Off Road Bicycle Association bike trail, and to phase the trail out in the next three to five years.

This summer, cyclists in skintight shorts raced through the French countryside in the annual Tour de France. The winner, Alberto Contador, rode to victory on a Trek Madone 6.9 Pro that would cost consumers $8,249.99. Alice Wilkes also bought a Trek bike this summer, but she had a very different experience. Wilkes bought a Trek Lime, which shifts automatically so riders don’t have to fuss with gears, stops when cyclists pedal backwards (like in the old days), and has a big, comfy seat. It retails for $589.99.

The Cotton Patch Ride report:
The weather was gorgeous. Although the temperature reached 90° Fahrenheit later in the day, it was mild (with low humidity) when we departed downtown Greenville at 8:30. At least twice over the years, the weather during the Cotton Patch Classic has been bad. One year, it was cold, wet, and windy, so I did a short course (45 miles). Another year, it rained so hard for so long that police officers pulled riders off the course. Even the wind cooperated yesterday. The average wind speed for the day was 6.7 miles per hour. I don’t count it as windy unless it reaches 10 miles per hour.
