My second stage ride in the 2024 Tour de Zwift (missed stage 1). Today’s route for group B: Makuri Islands Turf N Surf route. 15.3 miles and 649 feet of climbing. I rode this route once before on December 12th, 2022. Two climbs after a downhill. first one starts around 9 miles and the taller one starts around 13.5 miles. The last half mile is mostly flat. Weather outside: 27 degrees, cloudy, wind N 16 mph gusts 26 mph. No way I would ride outdoors today.
Until the climbs I stayed with a small group. The climbs separated me from others as I expected. Today’s ride was faster than my previous one on this route. Strava confirmed that: PR on Turf N Surf (51:14). Other Strava results: 3rd fastest time on Alley Sprint (44s) and 3rd fastest time on Pain Cavern Climb (8:01).
Checking ZwiftPower.com I was 422 out of 449 riders in group B. The Zwift group board put me around 710 out of 840.
The two climbs were in the second half of the route.
A new $1,200 administrative fee that El Paso Water is charging for outdoor racing events at the Lost Dog Trail Head is deterring some groups from wanting to use the open space.
At least two groups, one aiming to organize an outdoor trail running event and another trying to organize a mountain biking event on the land located in Northwest El Paso were told by an El Paso Water employee that they would have to pay a $1,200 administrative fee to get a permit to use the Lost Dog trail for their events.
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – Texas’s largest and most difficult mountain bike race took place around El Paso’s Franklin Mountains this weekend. This year, the 17th annual Puzzler MTB Race attracted over 400 participants from all over the U.S. and Mexico.
Organizers said this year, they wanted to provide more opportunities for beginners.
“This whole year… we’re going to focus on the beginner rides,” said Fernanda Graton, one of the directors for the Borderland Mountain Bike Association (BMBA). “And we saw the results this year.”
Day 3:Sierra Blanca to Van Horn: A javelina, a move to Central time, and Youtubers
Sunday January 14, 2024, 35 miles (56 km) – Total so far: 128 miles (206 km)
We talked too long to too many people today. Luckily it was shorter miles and ten miles of downhill. Oh, and more of those lovely tailwinds. So we made it pretty early into Van Horn. Thought, shoot we should have pushed on to Valentine, but then I realized we lost an hour because of the time change.
We talked to Charles, the owner of the Sierra Blanca Lodge for over an hour this morning over coffee. He’s really a great guy, if you can stay at his property, we highly recommend it.
Then we grabbed breakfast burritos at Delfinas in town and as we were about to leave, we chatted with Mike. He is building an off the grid Atlantis and he is a YouTube personality. We talked to him entirely too long so we hit the road after 11. Oh, and we saw a javelina just strolling through town. No biggie.
The ride today was entirely on a frontage road and the last bit on Interstate 10. Not ideal. Really loud. But easy. So we …
15.0 miles, 554 feet elevation gain. Lead-in is .3 miles. Ride the flat roads of the Greater London Loop, then out to Surrey via Deerfield to return to London proper. My last ride on this route was November 27, 2023. The climbing was spread out over the 15 miles with a threat of going up Box Hill that only partially materialized. My legs were grateful.
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – One of the biggest mountain biking races in the region is taking place this weekend, the El Paso Puzzler.
According to the organization, each course is considered epic by most mountain bikers’ standards with all distances riding to the far north end of the Franklin Mountain State Park.
Saturday’s Race is a 35 and 50 mile race day, it begins at 8:00 a.m. at Bowen Ranch off MLK Blvd in the northeast El Paso.
There is set to be close to 400 racers over the two day event.
Sunday Race’s race is a 15 Mile Race, Gates open at 6 a.m.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Some new stripes have been painted on some roads in Wichita Falls, they’re the new bike lanes being marked by the city to hopefully keep cyclists safe.
While safety is a large part of the city’s decision to implement the bike lanes, it also connect cyclists to central parts of the city, like connecting downtown to the circle trail.
“The next step is kind of these dedicated bike paths that you see in more places, so we had a few of them already, Hamilton, but now you’re going to see a lot more of those. They’re kind of strategically placed to connect people to the trail and and more …
An Instagram photo has gone viral, showing what appears to be someone with the VeoRide bicycle that wound up on top of the dome of Texas A&M’s Academic Building. The image of the person’s face is covered by a happy face emoji, and their left hand with an Aggie ring giving the “horns down” sign.
That followed a tweet from Texas A&M that also went viral, showing the bicycle on top of the dome.
An A&M spokeswoman says scaffolding at the base of the dome…which could have been the way the …

Day 2:Fort Hancock to Sierra Blanca: A day of a car free roads
Saturday January 13, 2024, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 93 miles (150 km)
Leaving Fort Hancock was a breeze. Jumped on Hwy 20 and then Texas Farm Road 192. There was no shoulder but we didn’t need one. For almost 20 miles we didn’t see any cars. Amazing! We did see a Border Patrol station and lots of ruins of towns of the past. The interstate really killed these small towns.
We stopped at Tiger Town Truck Stop and grabbed a couple bean burritos and they let us fill our water bottles. You can camp here and get a shower, just ask inside.
Then we joined Interstate 10 for 2 miles. Not great but when is interstate riding great? Then we were able to get on a frontage road and climbed a 4 to 5 % grade through the Sierra Blanca mountains for about 10 miles before arriving at a picnic area off the highway. No bathrooms but shaded tables which is nice. The …
