From Sunny Skies to a Quick U-Turn: My Rain-Driven Ride
The ride went south and east but not as far as I planned. I planned on riding the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route starting at 9:40 AM but approaching Walden the sky to the south looked like rain. I thought I could still ride the route if I pedaled the Lynskey Helix bike fast. I continued riding through Walden, Atascocita and back to FM1960. Crossing Lake Houston I looked to the south and the sky looked ominous with dark clouds to the horizon but I pedaled on. I made the right turn onto Fairlake Lane with the view of the sky through the trees, it didn’t look promising. Rounding the “S” curve light rain greeted me and I made the decision to make a u-turn. From that point it was a race back home against the advancing dark clouds. Looking west as I came across Lake Houston I thought rain was waiting for me but it was dry. Following Atascocita Shores Drive and Kings River Drive was parallel to the line of dark clouds to my left. Finally W. Lake Houston Parkway arrived. Now I rode perpendicular to the threatening clouds and hopefully away from them. I rode the usual streets back home finishing at 12:17 PM. There were a few wet spots on the driveway from stray rain drops but no more.
Even though the ride didn’t go as long as I planned the 32.06 miles got me to with 28 miles of my August goal of 904 miles. Now if the weather will cooperate Friday and Saturday I should reach the goal.
I stopped for a few minutes on the Atascocita Hike and Bike Trail and took these photos.
