Tandem biking brings thrill to visually impaired riders on local trails

Every first Saturday of each month in Stude Park between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., one might witness a dozen or more visually impaired or blind bicyclists cruising down the Heights hike and bike trail. Don’t be alarmed, they have help. The Lighthouse of Houston along with their partners, Achilles International, sponsors these monthly tandem bike rides, followed by a breakfast social. Tour de Groves bike ride postponed due to road construction, will return next year

GROVES — A charity bike ride tour that raises money for various causes while showcasing the sights in Groves and Southeast Texas is canceled for this year. Suspect charged with Intoxication Manslaughter in crash that killed bicyclist

Silsbee — A 39-year old driver is charged with Intoxication Manslaughter in a crash that killed a bicyclist in Silsbee, according to information the Silsbee Police Department provided to KFDM/Fox 4 News.

A judge set bond at $500,000 for Kendrick Sapp. He was arrested Saturday and taken to jail.

Silsbee Police Chief Shawn Blackwell identifies the victim as Kevin Gould, 53, of Silsbee.

Police say Gould was riding his bicycle on FM 418 in Silsbee at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday when police say Sapp, driving west in a 2015 Jeep Renegade, struck him in the 15000 block of FM 418 . Gould died at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Silsbee PD.

Husband and wife duo pedaling to raise money for Texas Mamma Jamma Ride

On any given weekend, Leonor “Leo” and Hawk Harris are racking up the miles on their road bikes for fun and for good causes.

This year, the husband and wife duo will once again hit the streets of Taylor and ride 70 miles in support of the Texas Mamma Jamma Ride. The Texas Mamma Jamma Ride raises money to support the Lone Star Circle of Care’s Big Pink Bus, which is a mobile mammography program that provides services across Central Texas.

In October 2009, the Texas Department of Public Safety Bicycle Patrol Unit (Capitol) began as a pilot program under the Texas Highway Patrol with six Troopers. After their initial training, the Unit’s first deployment was at a college football game, where they apprehended a suspect involved in a stabbing at a tailgate party. This incident would solidify the Unit’s place in the department.

Since becoming a full-time unit in 2016, the Bicycle Patrol Unit is now the go-to Unit to separate opposing crowds during rallies, protests and general gatherings across Texas. Today, the Bicycle Patrol Unit remains the premier Unit at the Capitol Complex, providing highway patrol duties, community policing, complex security, training and school visits. The Unit has also been deployed outside of the Capitol Complex to assist other law enforcement agencies with high-profile events across the state. The Bicycle Patrol Unit exemplifies teamwork, professionalism and dedication. Their presence at community events, schools and neighborhood gatherings has fostered positive relationships and promoted safety awareness.
