Austin is accepting donations to help replace bikes stolen from Camacho Activity Center

Ingrid Ristroph’s kids knew how to ride a bike, but this summer they learned how to do it safely at the Lorraine “Grandma” Camacho Activity Center.
“One of the things they learned that was powerful was how to bike and commute,” Ristroph said. “In terms of bike safety, they [center staff] were very organized.”
Over the summer, Ristroph herself learned a thing or two about riding around Austin.
But on Sunday, the bikes they used were among 16 stolen from the activity center in East Austin.
The bikes were used in multiple cycling education programs for kids ages 8 to 12. The programs include seasonal camps where kids ride from the …

Williamson County Sheriff seeks clues in bicyclist’s death near Andice

ANDICE, Texas — The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in the death of a bicyclist near Andice last week.
Deputies responded on August 17 between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to the 11000 block of FM 2338 for an injured bicyclist on the side of the road.
A 79-year-old man was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have information on the cause of the bicycle crash or travelled in the area at the time of the crash, to contact the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office at 512-943-1311.
Rails to Trails: Effort underway to create a multi-county hiking, biking trail

FULSHEAR (Covering Katy News)—Four cities and a county have joined forces to create a 31-mile hiking and biking trail that will run through three counties.
When finished, the 1093 trail—for FM 1093—will run westward from Fulshear through Weston Lakes, both of which are in Fort Bend County. The trail will continue over the Brazos River and through Wallis, in southern Austin County. The trail will continue to Eagle Lake, in Colorado County.
The vision is that the trail would be a high-quality, safe trail requiring minimal maintenance and can encourage economic development. There is no definite completion or opening date, as plans are still in the works. But the 1093 Rails-to-Trails Project has been underway since 2022, when the four cities and Austin County formed the 1093 Rails-to-Trials Local Government Corporation.

The proposed naming of a bike route in honor of late Houston planning director Pat Walsh is closer to reality, although the section of path honoring him is shorter than advocates had hoped.
Catch up quick: In August 2023, community advocates and Walsh’s widow, Lindsey Aldrich Walsh, asked the city to officially designate nearly 10 miles of existing streets, paths and bike lanes from North Loop 610 and Nicholson Street south to Texas Medical Center as the Pat Walsh Bikeway.

Born December 6, 1940, to Basil and Florence Mennie, Leon is remembered by his family as the solid foundation they could always rely on. He was a resident of Billings, MT for 75 years before moving to Texarkana in 2016. He was an avid sports enthusiast whose passions included mountain biking and golf. Most of all, he supported his family in their passions and pursuits, never missing a chance to be involved in their activities, his 58 years of marriage to his wife standing as a testament to how much he valued his family.
