PARIS — When Grant Koontz turned 16, he wanted a car, like most teens. His parents gifted him a bike instead.
Little did he know that substitution would put him on a path to the Olympics.
As a student at Klein High School, Koontz competed in baseball, basketball, football and diving. He never excelled, for reasons ranging from his size to his technical abilities.
But when he first got on a bike, he realized that in cycling, there’s nowhere to hide. The sport gives back what you put into it. It was just him and the bike — no excuses.
