City of El Paso holding community meeting for new Safe Routes to School Action Plan

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – The City of El Paso is hosting a community meeting to discuss its Safe Routes to School Action Plan.
The meeting is happening at 5:30 PM Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at the Center for Civic Empowerment on the 17th floor of the Blue Flame Building at 304 Texas Avenue in Downtown El Paso.
The city’s action plan aims to address school zone safety and promote walking and bicycling to school. The city wants to get community input on the creation of the plan.

MetroBike to get a makeover this summer after a pause in operations

On July 1, the city’s bike rental program, MetroBike, will shut down in order to undergo a transformational change. When it reopens in mid-July, CapMetro Bikeshare will have new stations, e-bikes and an app, along with a vision to expand across the city.
The retooling of the bikeshare program is part of a strategic expansion plan that will grow the system from the current 76 stations to more than 300 over the next 10 years and electrify the fleet of bicycles for hire. City Council approved a Texas Department of Transportation advance funding agreement at its last meeting on May 30. Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, owned by professional cyclist and native Austinite Lance Armstrong, has faced six break-ins since November of last year.
Even Armstrong’s own Derringer electric bicycle — valued at $20,000 — was reported stolen in the sixth burglary on March 9. Armstrong had allowed Mellow Johnny’s to use it as a showpiece in the store.

Mayor announces deal on Shepherd-Durham project for adjusted lane loss, bike route

A Heights road project paused after Mayor John Whitmire raised concerns about the loss of lanes for drivers is back on pace, after what officials called a compromise to some design changes.
Whitmire’s office said in a statement that the compromise “preserves the standard widths of general-purpose lanes on Shepherd and Durham, and the number and width of these lanes for two blocks of 11th Street.”
