LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – The Texas 4000 Bikers Against Cancer is a non-profit group where bikers trek thousands of miles to spread awareness against cancer.
University of Texas at Austin students chose to embark on the Ozark Trail that runs through Southwest Louisiana because of its connections to Cancer Alley, an approximately 85-mile stretch of communities along the banks of the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where communities exist side by side with some 200 fossil fuel and petrochemical operations.
The bikers have been training for months. One rider, Tanisha Jasani, explains she has connections to the area.

Car hits, kills 5-year-old Wylie boy riding bicycle

Carlos Ramos and Martha Perez are struggling to understand a world without their son, Jaden Ramos, who had just turned five years old.
Jaden was riding his bicycle in his neighborhood, the Glen Knoll Mobile Home Park in Wylie, when he was hit by a car on Wednesday.
Police said they got the call around 6:30 p.m. They said Jaden was taken to Medical City Dallas where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Investigators said the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with them. …

Vernon Leslie Duke (Buz) passed peacefully on May 22, 2024, 9:05pm CDT, at the age of 91 in Fort Worth, TX. He was surrounded by those who loved him, including his wife of 68 years, Ida Lee Enzor Duke. Vernon was born on October 8,1932, in Denver, CO, to Annie Elizabeth LeRossignol Duke and Vernon Johnson Duke. He graduated from South Side High School (1950) in Rockville Centre, NY, and continued his education at Colorado State University on an ROTC scholarship. Vernon began his career in Fire Protection with FIA in Charlotte, NC. This is when he met Ida Lee. Vernon served his country as a B-25 pilot in the Air Force, and he and Ida Lee were married on March 31, 1956 in Enid, OK, where Vernon was in flight training. Their first child, Elizabeth Anne arrived in 1957. After discharging from the Air Force, Vernon returned to FIA. Their second child, Janet Lillian, was born in 1962. In 1966 Vernon secured a Fire Protection Engineering position at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, NM. He retired 29 years later in 1995. Vernon had a full life doing what he loved, which included taking care of his family, engineering, sailing, skiing, birds, gardening, and riding in 100 mile mountain bicycle races. …
Man sues Quest Diagnostics for negligence after bicycle accident

Bruce Alan Buckner has filed a lawsuit against Quest Diagnostics, Incorporated and Tarori Mark in the District Court of Harris County, Texas (Court Case ID: 2024-29096) on May 6, 2024. The lawsuit alleges negligence after Buckner was struck by a vehicle driven by Mark, an employee of Quest Diagnostics, while he was riding his bicycle.

SAN ANTONIO – The City of San Antonio is reaching out to residents for their input on a new bike network plan aimed at enhancing connectivity and safety for cyclists.
A public meeting was held today at Coker Methodist Church, providing a platform for community members to share their visions for biking in the city. Attendees were encouraged to contribute ideas on designing ideal bike lanes, mapping out preferred routes, and suggesting improvements to biking infrastructure.
The interactive session allowed participants to actively engage in shaping the future of cycling in San Antonio.
