Austin students pedal to school in a city-wide initiative for Bike Month

AUSTIN, Texas — May is Bike Month in Austin, and Wednesday specifically is Bike to School Day.
Rhonda Bolick with the City of Austin’s Safe Routes to School program said they had lessons throughout the school year to teach students how to safely bike or walk to school.

MSU Texas cyclist Molly Hayes wins time trial at nationals

The Midwestern State University Cycling team wrapped up its 2023-24 season in style last weekend, with freshman Molly Hayes winning the national champion in the time trial at the USA Cycling National Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Hayes finished the time trial in 39.30 to win the women’s varsity event. She also fared well in the criterium, finishing 21st, and she placed 33rd in the road race.
MSU Cycling Director Pablo Cruz Trochez was impressed with how Hayes handled the spotlight and also the mountainous terrain in New Mexico.

Some Newton Rayzor Elementary School students wore wings to meet the weekly “bike bus” bright and early on Wednesday morning.
All the students wore helmets, some of them in superhero colors. And Stephanie Brooks, the bike bus coordinator, had her electric bike loaded with snacks and a bubble machine.
This marks the second year the school’s students have made the weekly ride, and they have some special guests. It’s National Bike and Roll to School Day, and Denton ISD Superintendent Jamie Wilson is in the parking lot of the Village Church, tires aired and helmet on.

Bikers with Ride 2 Recovery make pit stop in Killeen on Wednesday

Over 50 wounded veterans and supporters with the 2024 Project Hero Ride 2 Recovery made a pit stop at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon.
Covering more than 370 miles this year by bicycle, Project Hero’s 15th annual ride started in San Antonio and will finish in Arlington. As a part of the ride, participants took a break to honor their fallen comrades with a wreath-laying ceremony Wednesday before heading to their hotel for the night.

Richardson council appoints members to new commissions

The makeup for the two newest Richardson commissions was confirmed by Richardson City Council.
Members of the bicycle pedestrian advisory committee as well as community inclusion and engagement commission were appointed during the May 6 council meeting.
The context
Council previously approved the creation of the community inclusion and engagement commission last November and elevated the status of bicycle pedestrian advisory committee from a subcommittee of the parks and recreation commission last December. Individuals appointed to each commission will serve two-year terms.
The community inclusion and engagement commission will provide an annual report to council and will serve as an advisory body to council on diversity, equity and inclusion issues. The bicycle pedestrian advisory committee will help advise city staff on refining the city’s complete streets plan. …
