Station Mountain Bike Park: What to know before hitting this Texas playground
By Becky Timbers | www.twowheeledwanderer.com
Every mountain biker has their strengths. The strength that I do not have is jumping. I’ve never been confident getting air nor have I really had the desire to spend much time in the air. Sure, little drops and jumps are fine – even fun! – but bigger stuff? Way out of my comfort zone.
But I didn’t let this (rational) fear of jumping keep me from checking out one of Texas’s newest bike parks and playgrounds – Station Mountain Bike Park.
Located just a few miles south of Spider Mountain – the one and only lift-served downhill park in the state – Station Mountain is all about jumps. There big jumps, little jumps, gap jumps, and hell-no jumps. There are also a few natural/raw trails, too, although that’s not really what it’s known for.
But the best part about Station Mountain? …

Houston awarded for 11th Street redesign as new mayor reviews its effectiveness
Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org
Houston Mayor John Whitmire is re-evaluating a contentious street safety project in the Heights that was completed under the previous administration. The $2.4 million initiative, which added bicycle lanes and reduced space for cars and trucks, was recognized by the Texas chapter of the American Public Works Association for its success in “improving infrastructure and quality of life.”
The recent transformation of 11th Street in Houston’s Heights neighborhood could be considered contentious and polarizing. Some have celebrated safety and mobility benefits associated with the road work, which included the addition of bicycle lanes and a …

New study identifies most dangerous places in Houston for kids walking, biking
By Janet Miranda | www.chron.com
Between 2018-2023, there were a total of 629 incidents involving cars and children walking or cycling—21 were fatal, according to a new Rice University analysis.
Motor vehicle injuries were the cause of death of 21 children in the Houston area over the past five years, according to a report released by Rice University’s Baker Institute.
The Baker Institute’s report paints a picture of lessening outdoor independence for children in an increasingly car-centric world. The study reports physical activity among children in the United States has decreased precipitously over the past 50 years due in part to the establishment of a car-dominated society. Walking and biking are the primary modes of transportation for children, but the fear of car accidents is one of the key factors that limits their outdoor activities and physical exercise. And that fear is not without some merit: between 2018-2023, Houston saw a total of 629 incidents involving …

Biking from Austin TX to Anchorage Alaska!
By Rama Hamoudah | www.crazyguyonabike.com
Spring Break Ride – March 9-11 – 150 miles!!
Day 1: This consisted of a 72 mile ride from Austin TX to Canyon Lake. Biking for this long is definitely a mental challenge. The part that really got me was the last 10 miles because there where some pretty big climbs I was not mentally prepared for. Thankfully my ride group was really kind and encouraging and we got through it together. There where some pretty crazy backroads with some scary drivers who honked at us which scared me. By the time we got back I was proud of all of us for making it through but I was also exhausted. The last thing I wanted to do was set up my tent to sleep in and it really did take everything in me to set up my tent. No access to showers so just used some body wipes. The night was pretty nice, we all set up a campfire and everyone sat around it. I was pretty mentally exhausted though and I was ready to head to sleep.
4300 ft elevation gain!
Day 2: Honestly the night was so cold that I think I slept for max an hour. Waking up and packing my tent to move to the next place I think took everything in me. I woke up and there was ice all over my bag and shoes. I changed and got ready to bike 62 miles. Not getting …
