Day 30 – Vanderpool to Kerrville, TX: A nice day on rolling hills
Sunday October 22, 2023, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 1,635 miles (2,631 km) We woke up to a dark cloudy morning that was heavy with humidity. It looked like it could start raining any minute. In fact, it started sprinkling lightly when we were eating breakfast but then stopped and that was it for the day. I do have to say that we have been blessed with great weather so far. It is forecasted to rain as we get closer to Austin in the next couple days. Still hoping it passes us by.
Today was a great day of riding. We did start out with what had been called “Heart attack hill”. Some were saying that the grade was 20% on that hill. All I know is I had the bike in granny gear and just moving at 3.5 mph up that hill. It was humid and the sweat was just dripping off my face and arms. I also had an issue with my glasses fogging up. I guess it was caused by my body heat. It was a good thing that it was done early in the ride. It was cool and …
Day 31 – Vanderpool to Johnson City, TX: Up and down
Monday October 23, 2023, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,709 miles (2,750 km) During the night, I could hear it was raining off and on. In the tent it always sounds worse than it is. We did wake to clouds and spitting rain. Took off with the rain jacket on, but it didn’t take long before I had to take it off. It was just too warm and humid. You will either get wet with the rain or wet from sweating and if it’s not too cold, I prefer getting wet with the rain.
It was a beautiful day of riding. There were just enough interesting things to make it good. We started off riding this road through cattle country. It was just an open range with the cattle there on the side of the road. They must be used to bikes coming through because they didn’t even move as we rode by. Usually, cattle are pretty spooked by bicycles. Then it was through ranch after ranch. It was hilly today. Still in “Texas Hill Country”. Much of the day, if you were not …
