On the brink of collapse, BCycle bike sharing system gets $500K boost from Houston
Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

“There are a lot of people who use the service and we don’t want them to lose the service,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said.
City Council approved the money Wednesday from Houston’s general fund, aimed at giving the nonprofit Houston Bike Share a few more months of funding to keep roughly 60 kiosks and the bikes held there operational. Houston’s planning department will work with the nonprofit to decide how the money will be spent and formalize an agreement with the nonprofit. …

The ups and downs of Elena Walch’s 70-day charity bike ride across seven U.S. states and four Canadian territories seemed to mirror the emotional turmoil that cancer inflicts upon families all over the world.
In addition to the punishing her body received bicycling 5,890 miles on the road this past summer, Walch weathered a weeklong crying jag, numbing cold, torrential rain, painful falls and bouts of hysterical laughter. She was also the recipient of random acts of kindness and charity from strangers.
The 2019 Fredericksburg High School graduate was part of a group of 46 University of Texas-Austin students selected to participate in the Texas4000, which is the longest annual charity bike ride in the world, according to its spokesperson. The team raised nearly $500,000 riding for cancer research, Walch said.
“I had a crying streak that started at Pike’s Peak in Colorado and ended in Logan, Utah,” laughed Walch, who now works in …
