‘Bucket list thing’: Cross-country bike ride by seniors offers tips for others to follow
By Tom Corwin | www.postandcourier.com
Ed Cawthorn, 76, of Charleston was at the Grand Canyon last year when he bumped into a fellow seasoned adventurer and they began to swap stories. And that man helped launch Cawthorn on a new quest: biking across the country.
That trip, with three other riders in their 70s or late 60s, and no other support, offers helpful tips and advice for those who might seek to make a similar arduous journey.
Cawthorn had thought about a cross-country trek, maybe walking or biking, but meeting someone who had done it three times lit a new fire in him. He told himself, “Don’t put this off any longer.” …
The Hill Country of central and west Texas provided a significant challenge to the cross-country bike riders.
… There was also the chance to see the country up close. The Hill Country of central and southwest Texas is aptly named, Cawthorn said.
“It’s a fact, there are a lot of hills there,” he deadpanned.
Cable remembers leaving Yuma, Ariz., in the morning “and seeing the sun rise and silhouette the mountains behind us.”
There was also a memorable ride across the Mississippi River via the 500-foot-tall John James Audubon Bridge north of Baton Rouge, La., Cawthorn said. …
#FancyWomenBikeRide hosted by @BikeDenton was a blast! Everyone looked amazing.

… Follow rules of road
Re: “Look out for bicyclists,” Your Turn, Thursday:
Yes, we vehicle operators should look out for bicyclists because, frequently, bicyclists don’t look out for vehicles; they have no regard for abiding by the Texas rules of the road, such as stopping at stop signs and yielding where designated.
Under Texas law, a bicycle is a vehicle. Bicyclists should be road wise and obey all traffic laws, signs and signals, including stopping at all stop signs and red lights.
There’s room for all if all safely obey the rules of the road.
