Benbrook Lake biking path will stay open longer

A popular biking path at Benbrook Lake scheduled to close will now stay open a little while longer. The closure has been delayed until January 1, after a compromise between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a cyclist community.

Come out and race on the 8.5 miles of 99% rock-free, fast, flowy single track trail including almost two miles of machine-built flow-trail with some berms big enough they almost count as wall-rides. The whole trail was designed with going fast in mind with sweeping corners, climbs mindfully spaced apart to allow for recovery in between them, and plenty of room to pass. The trails have multiple spectator locations around the course. You will almost always have an audience!

Video: Bicyclist killed after being struck by vehicle near 19th and Dover

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A 63-year-old man has died after he was struck by a vehicle in west Lubbock Tuesday night.
Emergency crews were called to a crash involving a bicyclist near 19th Street and Dover Avenue just after 10 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found 63-year-old Harvest Youngblood with serious injuries. Police stated he was attempting to walk his bicycle across 19th Street when an SUV struck him.
Youngblood was taken University Medical Center, where he later died.
The driver of the SUV has not been charged.
Lubbock Parks and Recreation to host bike rodeo on September 9

LUBBOCK, Texas — The City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation has invited everyone ages 4 and up to participate in the Safety City bike rodeo at 46th Street and Avenue U.
The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on September 9.
Participants will receive a bike and helmet safety check before riding through an obstacle course to practice their safety skills.

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Officials with the City of Amarillo released that Rick Klein Trails will host an unveiling for its new Bicycle Tree Sculpture on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Rick Klein Sports Complex.
COA officials stated that the sculpture is 12 feet tall and more than six feet wide. The sculpture features 12 bicycles will mark the entrance of the hiking and bicycle trails, and weighs around 600 pounds. …

Houston police said a homeless man was found dead along a hike-and-bike trail as city workers worked to clear the path on Wednesday.
HOUSTON — Police are investigating after a man was found dead Wednesday along a trail in downtown Houston.
Investigators said they’re waiting for autopsy results, but the man appeared to have trauma to his head.
His body was found around 8:20 a.m. along a hike-and-bike trail near James Buke Park on McKee Street along Buffalo Bayou. …

SAN ANTONIO – The city of San Antonio ripped out four concrete barriers and reduced the size of two others in front of a downtown church just months after they were built, following pressure from a prominent real estate developer, records obtained by KSAT Investigates show.
City officials last month defended the construction project, a protected bike lane in front of First Presbyterian Church, after church leaders told KSAT the work was not communicated to them properly.
Voters approved the bike lanes as part of a larger $42 million 2017 municipal bond project.

Funding from Harris County Precinct 4 will help the Houston Parks Board fill a gap between two of the city’s largest and most popular parks.
Less than 2 miles separate two of the biggest and most popular parks in Houston.
But for the city’s cyclists and pedestrians, getting between Buffalo Bayou Park and Memorial Park feels like a long trek filled with hazards. There is no trail along the bayou, and Memorial Drive – which is lined by homes and businesses, often busy with vehicle traffic and has a narrow, shared-use sidewalk running alongside it – is the only major roadway that connects the two urban parks.
“They’re so close, yet because there’s no safe, attractive connection between them, they feel so far away from each other,” said Joe Cutrufo, the executive director of BikeHouston, a local nonprofit that advocates for cyclists.
