Friend & Foe: Wind! Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood
The brightest thing about today’s bike ride was my orange wind jacket with the mostly cloudy sky. No technology problems today. Glad I broke the string of those. I rode out at 10:47 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike to ride the Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route. The challenge would be the strong SE 17 to 16 mph wind on the way back from Caney Creek. In the video you can see the clouds and a couple of times when a blue sky appeared. I’m glad I wore a long sleeve jersey under that orange wind jacket because the wind made it feel cooler than the 70 to 74 degrees during the ride. I got concerned when I felt a few sprinkles as I rode on Valley Ranch Parkway but they didn’t follow me for long.
Below is a comparison of the last 12 rides on this route. Today’s 32.56 miles is about the average distance for the other 11 rides. The wind kept my overall average speed below average.
Most of the ride to Caney Creek I had the wind at my back with a few roads putting at as a side wind. After riding under US59 to begin the ride back to Kingwood the wind was hard to pedal into. The challenging places were the US59 frontage road south of FM 1485 to Valley Ranch Parkway and Valley Ranch Parkway riding south of Texas 99 overpass with a small incline to add to the effort. In Briar Tree and Oakhurst the trees and houses buffered the wind some. The AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows the gear usage and power.
