YMCA Gator Ride Update
email I hope this email receives you well. We are connecting with you today to give an update on the YMCA Gator Ride. After 33 years, the Baytown Family YMCA has made the difficult decision to step down as the host of the Gator Ride due to a lack of staffing resources to fully support an event of this magnitude. This Baytown tradition has provided thousands of riders with the opportunity to participate in a great ride with others in their community ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive through the fundraising efforts of this event. The Baytown Family YMCA continues to provide for youth and families in the community offering After School Care, Day & Holiday Camp and Teen programs. We continue to look toward the community to support our efforts in these areas through our Annual Fundraising Campaign. The Gator Ride will move forward with another local organization, Hearts & Hands of Baytown.
Sincerely, LaKeisha Harris District Executive Director Baytown Family YMCA

Texas A&M Transportation Institute report shows traffic fatalities are up in Texas
By Sumaiya Malik | communityimpact.com
A traffic safety report presented to the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Board on Nov. 14 showed traffic fatalities are up in the region. The report also shows distraction is the most frequent reported factor causing the crashes.
“Regionally, crashes have been trending upward over the last 10 years or so with the exception being the two-year period during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021,” said Jeff Kaufman, Texas A&M American Institute of Certified Planners associate research scientist.
The report prepared by Kaufman looked at 16 focus areas, including regional crashes, which …
… The report showed nonmotorized road users, especially bicycle and pedestrian fatalities, are 21% of all the region’s traffic deaths, despite only being 2.6% of all the region’s crashes. Pedestrians represent 90% of fatalities, compared to 10% of bicyclists. For serious injuries, it is 70% pedestrian versus 30% for bicycles, the report said. …

Day 22: Kountze to Houston
Wednesday November 16, 2022, 89 miles (143 km) – Total so far: 1,164 miles (1,873 km) As expected it was in the 30’s at the start and was still in the 40’s when I stopped for lunch in Cleveland, TX. After lunch the sun started peeking through the clouds, and I was able to shed some layers. By the time I got to Houston it was in the 50’s and once more enjoyable to be out on a bike. Actually, I believe a bad day on the bike beats a good day most anywhere else! About 20 miles from home things were very familiar and it hit me that this tour was ending. I found myself slowing down to savor the final miles. When I pulled into my driveway it was done. Finishing at home makes the end more final. Finishing at some …

The Second Sign of the Apocalypse

I bought an e-bike. For my wife.
She loves it. It allows her to ride with me and keep up. Now all of her errands are bike first, car second. It was an amazing transformation. Urban e-bikes are a very viable use case (as I have always said).
I’ll probably never have one. And definitely not ever a trail bike. As a comparison, that bike is 2X the weight of the bike behind it. …
