David Loredo peers out, watching cars pass on W. Dallas; the breeze ruffles the flowers and letters from loved ones that surround Shane McKinney’s Ghost Bike. Over a week ago, Loredo and other Pride Ride volunteers spent their evening cleaning the spot where their fellow rider had been struck by a vehicle to prepare for the ghost bike’s installation.
At the time of the crash, against Loredo’s continued requests, McKinney had not been wearing a helmet. McKinney was in the tail end of the group, and was hit among the other cyclists, which included his brother, Matthew. Loredo urges his riders to always have their gear, spare parts and be predictable in the moves they are making on the road. “There is always some sprawling, as I tell the riders to get …

Day 37 Silsbee: Light of day
Monday October 31, 2022, 60 miles (97 km) – Total so far: 2,048 miles (3,296 km) I had a lovely comfortable night’s sleep in my little cabin, home from home. We all decided to have a late, 8.00am, breakfast so as to not rush off from this haven of rest. It was the right decision to chill out and watch the sun come up. It was very cold and dew covered everything in copious quantities, I believe this is going to be the feature of most mornings going forward as we near the gulf coast.
Three weeks today we will have finished, I cannot believe how time has flown. Already, I find it hard to remember all the places we have been through, although it does come back when I read my journal which is one of the main reasons for doing it. I also try to pass on useful information to future crazy cyclists who pass this way, for me the whole point of this website.
If I had to sum up today it would be a very long straight road through a big wood, called The Big Thicket. Occasionally, I passed points of civilisation and farms with fields bounded by woods and a couple of rivers. Having said that, it was very fascinating place to travel through. The woods at a guess are natural since they seemed to be a mix of deciduous and evergreen trees growing randomly. There were some …

Day 37: Shepherd, TX to Silsbee TX
Monday October 31, 2022, 61 miles (98 km) – Total so far: 1,938 miles (3,119 km) Our last full day in Texas! We started a little later than normal as the Shephard Sanctuary was really nice. We stayed in the bungalow so we didn’t need to set up our tent.
A pretty unremarkable ride today. Other than it was really flat! Could have been Iowa in September. Trees are turning colors a bit. We made good time to the first town but there were no services so we went on to the next town a total of about 13 miles. There was a food trucl s we stopped for a breakfast taco.
Its Halloween so Kelly had to dress up as did one of our ride mates. Thats all the pictures we have from today.
