Video: ‘We’re coming back stronger than ever’: Houston area bike group returns to streets after cyclist killed in hit-and-run crash
Bryce Newberry | www.click2houston.com
HOUSTON – Pride Bike Ride Houston returned to its weekly tradition Tuesday night, exactly two weeks after a hit-and-run driver killed one of their own.
Organizers said they had one of the largest group turnouts ever, as other bike groups joined them in pedaling from Montrose, to the Museum District, through Downtown, and back to the Heights.
“To be back on our bikes today, it’s very emotional, but at the same time, it’s so empowering,” said group rider Kacey Ketenbrink.
Shane McKinney, a 45-year-old father, was hit and killed during the group’s ride on Oct. 11. Houston Police said he …

Day 31: Johnson City, TX to Austin, TX
Tuesday October 25, 2022, 49 miles (79 km) – Total so far: 1,636 miles (2,633 km) Last night we had a brief thunderstorm and woke up this morning at 5 AM to howling winds. We started packing our stuff at that point since we figured we wouldn’t get any more sleep in the tent. We got dressed and headed across the road to an open gas station that had coffee and Mexican pastries. We purchased some yummy items and headed back to the campground where we huddled in the laundry room (really a laundry closet), ate our pastries and drank our coffee.
At that point, the other riders were getting up and breakfast was being set out. We picked through the breakfast, made our lunch and took down the tent. The only good thing about the howling winds was that the rain fly on the tent was completely dry. We headed out of camp around 8:15. It was a nice ride with some ups and downs but nothing too severe for the first 10 miles or so. We found a coffee stop at a …

Day 24: Van Horn to Marfa: Exquisite Oddities
Thursday October 27, 2022, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,170 miles (1,883 km) We rode US 90 from Van Horn to Marfa, 74 miles on a road straight as an arrow, slight incline most of the way, through a huge wide valley. We are now in the Big Bend area of Texas. As we approached Marfa we saw evidence of local artists’ work along the highway, including a realistic looking Prada shop. Prada Marfa. A blimp-like object was visible for miles. Part of a weather station? No water or food anywhere along our route today, so we were pretty hungry by the time we rolled into Marfa. We had great salad, pizza, and beer at Para Llevar’s outdour cactus garden. Two 70+ mile days left the legs tired. We agreed to do fewer miles tomorrow. …
