Midtown by B Cycle
Dan – Thoughts from Huntington Place | dannagel1.blogspot.com
Again, I am running behind on my posts. This trip actually happened Monday, October 17.
I took the Park & Ride bus up Louisiana and got off around the Pierce Elevated. YMCA let me use the restroom. Hey, I’m almost 70, I don’t pass up many opportunities. My first intended stop was behind Randalls, but was out of service, so it good that I started at YMCA. Then I started meandering around Midtown, defined, apparently, by B Cycle, as East of Spur 527, South of Pierce Elevated, West of 288, and North of 59, except for Peggy Park, which became my bridge to Texas Southern University. Was that sentence too long for you?
I read the Historical Marker in the middle of Midtown. Way back when, the state fairgrounds …
Eastwood Home Tour
Dan – Thoughts from Huntington Place | dannagel1.blogspot.com
I’m getting behind on my postings. Part of the problem is I still haven’t figured the most efficient way to move photos from my iPhone, to the computer, and to Blogger. Se, for right now, I may leave pictures off, so come back in a few days, and I promise (pinky swear) to post photos.
After church on Sunday, October 16, I headed to Greater East End, as B Cycle calls it, or Eastwood as the civic association knows it. Old neighborhood, crossed by Polk, Telephone and Lockwood. This is an area I have been through with the Tour de Bicycle this month, and the paper had an article last week about a home show. 1935 is a common build date. Some architect converted the old Church of the Redeember into 45 affordable units, and four of them were available to see. A challenge for the remodel was that this is on the historic register, so the …

Day 26 Del Rio: Border guard
Wednesday October 19, 2022, 41 miles (66 km) – Total so far: 1,461 miles (2,351 km) We all had a great time last night, it was a much needed rest. Lydia, is one determined lady but yesterday had drained her somewhat and she decided she needed a drink. The photo says it all.
The campsite was on top of a hill with fantastic views. There was a great sunrise as we were all sitting down for breakfast which gave a good atmosphere. We stayed just a little bit longer than usual but we did have to get on the road. I would recommended it as a place to camp. Today is one of our shorter days at 41 miles to Del Rio so we left late at around 9.30.
As usual I had to get up a couple of times in the night which is a bit of a pain but also great to take the opportunity of gazing into the night sky at the brilliant array of stars. Whilst it is a place of beauty, it is also a strange place. We are very close to the Mexican border and at this point there is no wall. Last night they were strange strobe lights in the area close to the border possibly along it, I cannot figure out what this was all about.
The border patrol service has a big presence round here and they seem to be everywhere. The pastor’s wife in Sanderson said she believed last year they had apprehended 550 people who had illegally crossed the border. That doesn’t sound a lot for the …
Day 27 Camp Wood: Lucky man
Thursday October 20, 2022, 76 miles (122 km) – Total so far: 1,537 miles (2,474 km) Today we turned away from the border but more significantly the countryside changed to mostly trees and grassland. We would be entering Texas Hill country for real. The first 30 miles followed Highway 90 to Brackettville, where I stopped for a rather nice second breakfast. Manita’s is to be recommended, a friendly welcome plus excellent home-cooked food.
We also said goodbye to the union pacific railway which has never been far away since the start of the ride. It was funny when a train came the other way and I thought about it going through all the towns, wide open plains and mountain passes that I had passed through towards the Pacific where I started. It’s a love and hate relationship with these trains, nice to admire them with the long snake of carriages but it’s a real pain in the middle of the night when Casey Jones sounds his horn – three long, three short blasts.
In Brackettville, the route took US334 towards Camp Wood which is a country road with very little traffic and a good surface. It was rolling landscape dotted with large oak trees and open pastures at either side and at times I thought I could have been in the south of France but without the traffic. At one point, I was convinced the large trees at either side of the road were olives, but on closer inspection they were as …

Day 25: Sanderson, TX to Seminole Canyon State Park, TX
Wednesday October 19, 2022, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,308 miles (2,105 km) A nice night at the church. We awoke to a bible study group that came in at 6 am. Good thing we needed to get up early for a long day of riding. Scheduled for 81+ miles.
The weather was great as we left Sanderson. Light winds and clear. A great day for riding. We had a few stops along the way and were 49 miles in by about noon. We stopped for lunch at a roadside picnic area. Then we were on our way for the final 30+ miles. Shortly after that, the wheels fell off the wagon.
We were headed down a hill and we heard a "pop!" and whooshing noise of the air leaving our tube. We quickly stopped to assess the damage. At first it seemed that all we needed to do was change the tube but as we inflated the new tube, we noticed that the sidewall had a gash in it that was not going to contain the tube. So we left the bike upside down and waited for the sweep. We also tried to contact the SAG van but had no service. Once the …
Day 26 : Seminole Canyon State Park to Del Rio, TX
Thursday October 20, 2022, 41 miles (66 km) – Total so far: 1,349 miles (2,171 km) After SAGing into camp yesterday, put on the spare tire from our leader. Its slightly defective but should get us the 41 miles to Del Rio where the bike shop has a replacement. Dinner was at J&P Bar and Grill in Comstock. That was was very welcome for all.
Since its only a 41 mile ride, we slept in a bit today. Breakfast wasn’t until 8:00 and we hit the road around 9:30 after packing up camp. Weather was ideal again with light winds, sunshine and nice temperatures.
Comstock was our first butt break of the day about 10 miles in. There was supposed to be a historical marker but we couldn’t find it. We stopped about 13 miles later for another butt break and a snack with nothing remarkable to see.
We made a short stop at …
Austin balancing need for bicycle traffic lanes, driver needs during upgrades
by: Erica Brennes | www.kxan.com
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Cyclists are being forced to dodge traffic, and drivers are unhappy about new bike lanes.
KXAN Traffic Anchor Erica Brennes looked at how the City of Austin is trying to balance the concerns of both groups while keeping the roads safe for everyone during upgrades.
Greg Anderson, aka Walkable Austin on social media, is one of the rare Austinites who gets around without a car. But not without frustration.

Two bicycling events will affect Galveston traffic this weekend
www.galvnews.com
The 15th annual Bike Around the Bay and the second annual Bike Around the Island begin Saturday.
The Galveston Bay Foundation’s two-day, 170-mile Bike Around the Bay kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at Houston Raceway in Baytown, with riders biking from the Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry landing to Harborside Drive to 25th Street to Seawall Boulevard, and finishing at 81st Street.
To accommodate the participants while they’re on Seawall Boulevard, the south-side parking lane and south-most traffic lane — the inside eastbound lane — will be restricted to cyclists only from 25th to 81st Streets.
Vehicular traffic will continue in both directions, however, traffic heading east from …

Day 19: Kingston to Hatch: Into the Rio Grande
Friday October 21, 2022, 51 miles (82 km) – Total so far: 872 miles (1,403 km) After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, we continued our descent into the Rio Grande Valley. Much of the ride today was downhill. What a change! We rolled into the river area, stopping for some food supplies at a camp store near Lake Caballo. Then followed the river 25 miles to Hatch. Lunch at the “famous” Sparky’s burger joint. They were lined up outside to order. The famous green chili cheeseburger was in fact very good. This is chili country. We saw many chili packing plants along the road, big trucks loaded with bright red chilis, and stands selling chilis and pecans. It’s irrigated farm land, also growing cotton, corn, lettuce, etc. We were wondered where to stay for the night. David went into the Catholic Church to ask for ideas, and the priest insisted we stay in the fellowship hall, so that’s where we will sleep tonight! …
