Day 20 Van Horn: Roll of the dice
Thursday October 13, 2022, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,151 miles (1,852 km) Another new day but a change of direction and conditions. For the last four days I’ve been following the route of the Rio Grande. The river seems like an old friend who I followed and watched over many a mile. Today we say goodbye then climb out of the valley where it runs. We also enter another time zone and lose another hour. So last chance to enjoy a few things but new horizons to explore.
The route from Fort Hancock went out into the wilderness with the road winding its way through acres and acres of creosote bushes and rough pasture. No more cotton or pecan trees but cattle country. My bad experience of El Paso was well behind me and I am starting to enjoy Texas. …
Ghost bike memorials to honor two slain Houston bicyclists whose deaths remain unsolved

Ghost bike memorials created over the weekend will honor two Houston bicyclists struck by vehicles this year whose deaths remain unsolved.
Sajid Barajas, a 47-year-old immigrant, died around 2:15 a.m. May 30 after a white Nissan Altima hit him from behind while he was riding his bicycle in the 300 block of South Cesar Chavez Boulevard near Rusk, Houston police said. Barajas died after the impact from the collision threw him onto the road, near a railroad track. The driver of the suspect vehicle remains at large. …
