GROVES — When Tour de Groves began nearly a decade ago, the purpose was to showcase more than just the industrial lights of Southeast Texas.
“We started it because there’s not a lot of events in this area, and we have a lot to offer,” said Director Barbara Edington. “We have refineries, but we also have beautiful roads and Pleasure Island.”
Saturday/Oct. 29 will be the eighth year for the event that’s more than tripled in size. …

Biology Teacher on the road to recovery after mountain biking accident
He can feel his heart pounding in his chest as he attempts to mountain bike for the first time. The gears and braking system are as foreign to him as the trail he’s riding. Despite the unfamiliarity of the situation, one thing is certain: he is in for the ride of his life.
Ninth grade biology teacher Barrett Mick started mountain biking earlier this year and quickly discovered his passion for the sport. However, after months of practicing, he will have to take time off to recover after a major mountain biking wreck.
“My first mountain biking experience was April 1, 2022,” Mick said, “My cousin knew I had snowboarded before and he [said], ‘I think you’d really like mountain biking. Come join us at Spider Mountain,’ so I did. That was the first time in six years I [had] ridden a bicycle.”
Mick and his group decided to ride at Spider Mountain in Burnet, Texas, a bike park that has numerous trails suited …

Day 27: Live Oak TX to Austin TX
Tuesday October 4, 2022 38 miles. Cool, in low 60s, when we departed Live Oak. Well we shortened the ride this morning, as traffic was heavy even on frontage road. For me I watched every pedal stroke of his consecutive wins. He was epic. Glimpsed his bike hanging proudly on the wall. His sense of …
