A driver fatally struck a bicyclist late Monday night in west Houston, according to authorities.

Officers responded around 10:15 p.m. to the 6100 block of Westheimer Road near Greenridge Drive and found the man in the roadway and the driver still at the scene, HPD Sgt. David Rose said. The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Houston police are searching for a driver who fled on foot after hitting and killing a man riding a bicycle early Monday morning in the East End.

The rider, later identified as 47-year-old Sajid Barajas, was pedaling along South Cesar Chavez Boulevard near Polk Street around 2:15 a.m. when the driver of a Nissan Altima struck him from behind at a "high rate of speed," according to the Houston Police Department. Witnesses who saw the hit told investigators that the Altima driver kept going for a moment before pulling into a warehouse driveway and fleeing on foot, leaving the car behind. Police say driver could face charges after bicyclist killed in crash on Westheimer

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A driver could face charges for hitting and killing a man riding a bike in west Houston, according to police.

Houston police said the bicyclist was trying to cross the road in the 6100 block of Westheimer near Greenridge around 10:15 p.m. when he was hit by the driver of a white sedan.

"According to witnesses, he was traveling across the roadway, which is incredibly dangerous," Sgt. David Rose said. "We’ve worked many fatals on this particular stretch of Westheimer."

Investigators are looking into exactly what led up to the deadly crash. Police said a number of witnesses gave different accounts of what happened.
