HCTRA money to kick-start miles of new trails under plan approved by Commissioners Court
Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com
Surplus revenues from Harris County’s toll road system for years have paid for improvements to nearby roads and infused funds into street rebuilds around the county.
Now, the Harris County Toll Road Authority is about to go off-road. Under a plan unveiled Tuesday, the tolling agency will spend $53 million connecting existing cycling, running and hiking trails and building new ones. The projects, sketched out in a sweeping plan presented to Commissioners Court, aim to reconnect neighborhoods on opposing sides of the county’s tollways and leverage county money with that of management districts and other local agencies aiming to add trails.

The Best Places to Bike in Houston
By Daniel Renfrow | www.houstoniamag.com
The pandemic seems to be petering out now (still put on your mask), and Houston’s biking boom is holding steady. And, believe it or not, Houston is a bikeable city — as courageous and timid cyclists discovered when the mask mandates started in 2020. For the past few years, bike lanes have been slowly inching their way across the city and, in doing so, have turned areas like Downtown, the Museum District, and the East End into burgeoning biking hotspots.
Cycling in Houston is not without its downsides; however, regulars on Houston’s streets know that there’s still a lot of growth needed before the Bayou City can compete with more bike-friendly locales like Austin, Portland, and Seattle. Progress is still progress, though, and per the Houston Bike Plan, adopted in 2017, the city is well on track to continue leveling up on its bike-ability.
Since not all neighborhoods in Houston and its surrounding areas are bike-friendly, …

The Impossible Route is back and this time it’s a real doozy and a must watch. Enjoy this insane journey as Jeremiah Bishop and Tyler “Vegan Cyclist” Pearce attempt a never-before-ridden-by-bike route through the vast region of Texas known as “Big Bend”. It’s an out-and-back, mega-gravel, bikepacking route that consists of 340 miles of brutal off-road terrain. Their highly ambitious plan is to complete it in just three days. If it’s possible, they’ll have to ride—non-stop—through the night over barren moonscapes, mountains, canyons, and short but legendary pavement sections. …
