Day 1. Ft. Davis to Marathon: Peace and quiet
Sunday April 10, 2022, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 54 miles (87 km) Posted via email Mon Apr 11 04:31:02 2022 PDT
Today started with breakfast in the dark and a relaxed start for our ride. There were few vehicles on the road and the wind was calm for the first two hours. The only sound was birds greeting the new day. They were more heard than seen as we pedaled effortlessly down the secluded byway.
The temperature barely dropped below 60 last night. No need to wear layers this morning. Just a healthy dollop of sunscreen to protect my tender epidermis from the increasingly intense sun.
The ride to the town of Alpine was through a maze of the same dark, exposed rock we saw in the Davis Mountains. Shortly thereafter we reached a "geologic boundary". To the east is exposed limestone from an ancient seabed. These hills are lighter in color, less jagged and more covered with desert vegetation than the rugged igneous formations to the west.
We stopped midway for shopping in Alpine. This was the last grocery store we’ll pass before Theresa and I prepare dinner on Wednesday and …
Day 2. Marathon to Stillwell: Halfway to the Rio Grande
Monday April 11, 2022, 51 miles (82 km) – Total so far: 105 miles (169 km) Posted via email Tue Apr 12 02:59:02 2022 PDT
I woke up this morning staring into the star-studded sky, much as the same as when I retired last night. The setting moon left in its wake an ever darker sky, filled with stars that had previously remained obscured by its light. The Milky Way streaked across the sky until faded away with rising sun.
The Big Bend region is a certified as a International Dark Sky Place by the International Dark Sky Association. The paucity of ambient light, clean air and low humidity create nearly perfect conditions for star gazing. We anticipated this phenomenon on our tour, but reality exceeded my initial expectations.
Today was a short ride. Nearly everyone arrived at our destination by noon. I took a …
Day 3. Stillwell to Rio Grande Village: Bluffs, buttes and badlands
Tuesday April 12, 2022, 61 miles (98 km) – Total so far: 166 miles (267 km) Posted via email Wed Apr 13 02:50:01 2022 PDT
The wind blew all last night, filling our tent with dust (and our eyes, noses, mouths and lungs). It was somewhat calmer when we rolled out a little earlier than the past two days. The first hour of riding is my favorite. It’s just magical…low light angles and long shadows combined with the cool morning air.
Those optimum conditions didn’t last for long. The first 30 miles of our ride to Panther Junction was moderately uphill and against the wind. Everyone was exhausted when the reached the top of the hill.
After guzzling a Gatorade and enjoying a quick snack, I set off alone for today’s final destination. A turn toward the southeast meant the wind was no longer in my face. And, mercifully, the road to Rio Grande Village was mostly downhill. The biggest challenge was …

Day 35 – Johnson City to Austin
Wednesday April 13, 2022, 54 miles (87 km) – Total so far: 1,563 miles (2,515 km) We finally rolled into Austin today and saw most of the last of the hill country. More killer climbing too. I actually psyched myself out and had to walk the last 20 yards or so of Bee Cave Road, just before arriving in downtown Austin. I shouldn’t have kept looking up I guess.
We visited Mellow Johnny’s bike shop, home to …
Day 36 – Rest Day 4 – Austin Texas
Thursday April 14, 2022 Today was particularly nice day off spent wandering aimlessly through downtown Austin, beginning with a visit to the capitol building. Austin is a beautiful, vibrant city. I really enjoyed spending a day there. …

Day 19 : Merryville, Louisiana to Silsbee,Texas: Welcome to Texas!
Saturday April 9, 2022, 53 miles (85 km) – Total so far: 1,175 miles (1,891 km) It got cold last night. Good thing Don and I had the cabin at the town of Merryville’s park. It had a bed with a trundle so we both slept comfortably inside. Don was nice enough to give me the bed and he took the trundle. I was glad I didn’t step on him when I got up in the middle of the night. There was a separate bathroom and shower with lukewarm water that was luxurious for a mere $5 per person donation to stay. Don was up early but he’s quiet so I slept a little later. We headed to the diner across the street that I ate at last night. I had pancakes and bacon that really hit the spot. It was cold when we left at …
Day 20 : Silsbee, Texas to Coldsprings, Texas
Sunday April 10, 2022, 73 miles (117 km) – Total so far: 1,248 miles (2,008 km) Last night before dusk I went next door to the Honky Tonk Bar for some dinner. The ladies at the front desk said they had very good burgers at their grill, so I thought I’d see for myself. When I pulled open the door to enter this joint it was almost as if I was transported to a movie set for something like Urban Cowboy. This was the real deal. There weren’t a lot of people in yet so I wasn’t too too embarrassed to be wearing my bathing suit and flip-flops and T-shirt amidst tight jeans cowboy boots and cowboy hats. I did order the burger and fries to go and I have to say it was pretty darn good. Later that night I was cursing the Honkytonk as the music lasted until 1 AM. Our tents were pierced in perfect proximity so that we could hear every sleep disturbing beat of the base from the band that was playing that evening. It was only on …
Day 21 : Coldsprings, Texas to Navasota, TX
Monday April 11, 2022, 66 miles (106 km) – Total so far: 1,314 miles (2,115 km) When we got up this morning there was a cloudy sky with warm and slightly humid temperatures. As we were preparing to leave the Coldsprings Inn we met Bob and his wife from Rochester, New York. Bob was cycling the southern tier west to east and his wife was providing SAG support. We chatted briefly before heading west to the final destination on maps five of the Southern Tier, Navasota, Texas. we still have maPs 4, 3, 2 and 1 to go! Soon after we started we moved to sunny skies and rolling Hills in a mostly pastoral setting with crosswinds and headwinds ar times. Not too bad of a day. Highlights were …
Day 22 : Navasota, Texas to La Grange, Texas
Tuesday April 12, 2022, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,388 miles (2,234 km) I couldn’t fall asleep last night. The wind blew fiercely and at one point my tent seemed like it was going to uproot and take flight. The sound of flapping parachute material was not lulling me to sleep. Bud was the sound of the nearby night train that seemed to run, oh, say, every ten minutes. When the train wasn’t making noise (why do they have to sound a horn at 4 am? Nobody’s driving across a train track at that hour. And they have the crossing gates to keep vehicles off the tracks! The horn is overkill.), the firehouse siren was going off. And that isn’t a soft whisper in your mother’s voice that says …
Day 23 : La Grange, Texas to Austin, Texas
Wednesday April 13, 2022, 79 miles (127 km) – Total so far: 1,467 miles (2,361 km) Last night I slept well despite the humidity (I opened my rain fly on the tent) and my irrational fear of a tree branch breaking and falling on me during some gusty winds that fortunately dissipated as the moon replaced the setting sun. I went to sleep with one mission. Tomorrow I will get out extra early and pack my tent and be ready to go well before Don. I wanted him to feel the same sense of incompetence foods filled when we left Navasota. When I woke however Dunn was already up and he made his coffee and was drinking it in the lounge. Before I went there I hurriedly packed up my tent. I went inside change into my bike gear in the bathroom and …

04/12/2022: My rear derailleur broke, but made it to Austin
Tuesday April 12, 2022, 44 miles (71 km) – Total so far: 794 miles (1,278 km) The rear derailleur broke but I made it to Austin using the 3 front chain rings for gears. 3-speed. Staying at an airbhb that Jan set up for me. Thank you Jan. Will get the bike fixed tomorrow.
04/13/2022: Got the bike fixed
Wednesday April 13, 2022 Jan researched and sent me info on good bike shops in Austin. Went to one and they directed me to another called Eastside Pedal Pushers. I thought it was just the derallieur but they found I needed a new cassette and 3 chains. Took all day but they got it done and now the bike shifts great. Tested it on the 3.5 mi ride back to the airbhb. I highly recommend Eastside Pedal Pushers. Staying one more night at the airbnb. Justin the owner has been really great. Was nice to meet him. All is well for the 74 mi ride to Lagrange tomorrow.
04/14/2022: Got to LaGrange and Colorado Landing RV Park
Thursday April 14, 2022, 81 miles (130 km) – Total so far: 875 miles (1,408 km) Ride went fine for first 70 miles, but then got turned around trying to find the right turn. Finally got back on course. Made it to LaGrange, used google to find a restaurant for dinner. Found a nice Italian one, had (I forget the name) but it was good sausage with spagetti and lots of cheese. Then went to the RV park and got a shower, then set up the tent as usual. So a longer day than I expected. The main reason is I followed the Adventure cyclist route which went through two adjacent state parks. It was pretty, the road was quiet, but quite hilly. It’s a trade off, quiet, senic, hilly versus the shoulder on a noisy four lane highway which was a lot of the ride.

Day 35: Rest day in Navrasota, TX
Wednesday April 13, 2022 Today is a rest day in Navrasota, TX. After breakfast I walked to the Post office with Laura. It was a little over a mile. I mailed my taxes and a box of warm clothes I don’t need any more. We had coffee in the Classic rock coffee shop and stopped in Walmart on the way back. It was drizzling slightly but no big deal. I saw a tarantula on the sidewalk but it quickly jumped into its hole. They warned us not to walk on …
Day 36: Navrasota,TX to Cleveland, TX
Thursday April 14, 2022 Todays ride took us to Cleveland, TX. We are out of Texas hill country and into East Texas. We started out from the Best Western after our map meeting and snack table. Alison is our SAG driver today. The first 20 miles were similar to the end of the previous ride with Fields of cows, truck traffic and rolling hills. After the first SAG stop we turned left and rode through Sam Houston National forest. There was still traffic but the road was lined with trees and the roadside was covered in flowers which were mostly yellow but a few purple too. We exited the national forest and passed through two traffic circles into …
Trails Day Event rides into Austin to celebrate 32-mile parkway from downtown to Leander

Austin’s Redline Parkway Initiative is joining Celebrate Trails Day on April 23 with an event that includes a bike ride along the Red Line Parkway, Boggy Creek Trail, Crosstown Bikeway, Shoal Creek Trail, and through downtown, visiting several parks along the way.
Along with a chance to explore part of Austin, the ride offers an opportunity to learn more about the concept of a planned linear park and public space extending more than 32 miles along Capital Metro’s Red Line from downtown to Leander.
