35 Wind Gusts, 22% Humidity. This Can’t Be SE Texas
Delayed starting today’s bike to allow for the temperature to warm up from the 49 degrees at sunrise. While waiting I watched the 4th stage of the Itzulia Basque Country from Spain. Beautiful scenery there with some steep climbs. None of those here. I tried a different kit today with the 68 degree temperature at the 11:42 AM start time. Usually I would wear a wind jacket but today I opted for a long sleeve thermal jersey and a short sleeve jersey over that. That worked great and I will try this on some future rides. Maybe wind jackets are not always necessary. It was definitely windy for today’s bike ride.
This was the second biking this route this week but I rode the Lynskey R300 today. Overall I biked this route 7 times so far in 2022. Today’s ride was consistent with the other 6 rides except my average heart rate was lower. Out of the 7 rides 5 have been on the Cervelo Caledonia.
The strong wind didn’t stop the other three cyclists I saw on the ride, all near Fairlake Lane and FM 1960. The first cyclist made the video but the other two were too far away and too quick to catch on the GoPro.
Wind from yesterday’s cool front stepped it up a notch. The weather conditions for today: start 68 (humidity 29%, dew point 35), fair, wind N 18 mph gusts 28 mph; finish 75 (humidity 22%, dew point 34), fair, wind NW 20 mph gusts 35 mph. Mostly the wind wasn’t too bad on the way to FM 2100 and Old Atascocita Road except for riding east over Lake Houston. Exposed to the wind and gusts my bike got pushed around. I kept a firm grip on the handle bars but sometimes front wheel struggled to not go towards the concrete barrier to my right. This would’ve been the day to use the 30mm wheels instead of the 50mm. When I got a tailwind the pedaling was easy. Another hard section came riding north on FM 2100 to FM 1960 straight into the wind. Riding west over Lake Houston wasn’t quite as rough as east bound.
Last year on this date I rode the “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route going 42.58 miles.
The week is up to 140 miles. With 3 potential biking days left a 200 mile week looks possible. For the month I’m up to 252.9 miles, 39% of my 650 mile goal. All road miles so far this week. If the forecast is correct no Zwift rides necessary to keep my consecutive days streak alive.
