‘Man, you’re crazy’: San Antonio man bikes down dried up Splashtown slides
Madalyn Mendoza | www.mysanantonio.com
John Castillo rode his bike around the abandoned Splashtown water park on Wednesday, January 19.
Even without water, Splashtown has become a hotbed for adventure since permanently shuttering in September 2021. Recently, a photographer traversed the space to get photos before the water park is transformed into a car dealership. This week, another San Antonian transformed the former water park into a personal BMX park.
John Castillo, 30, snuck into the abandoned water park with friends to bike this week. After hanging out around the kiddie pools, Castillo says he walked through some of the slides to make sure they were stable before he rode his BMX bike through them.
He says riding his bike down the slides didn’t feel the same as passing …
Why neighbors worry city transportation plan could change their central Austin neighborhood
by: Candy Rodriguez | www.kxan.com
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Central Austin neighbors are worried changes to the city of Austin’s Street Network could mean the end of their neighborhood as they know it.
In Rosedale, West 49th Street is a narrow road surrounded by homes, a school and a historical site. Joe and Caroline Reynolds have called this area home for the last several decades.
“We’ve lived here for over 40 years,” Caroline said. …
$75 million in federal funding a major boost for Westside Creeks restoration project
Scott Huddleston | www.expressnews.com
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing $75 million for an ecosystem restoration project that local leaders believe will help revitalize San Antonio’s West Side.
Advocates say the funding is a victory for the Westside Ecosystem Restoration Project, which has been in the planning stages for 14 years. It will transform 11 miles of the Alazán, Apache, Martinez and San Pedro creeks, restoring natural bird and aquatic habitats that were paved over for flood-control projects during the 1950s and ‘60s. …
… Bexar County and the city are local partners on the project, which is expected to improve water quality in the creeks, as well as downstream sections of the river that flow through the South Side, and provide natural beauty and recreation. It will include an outdoor living classroom and complement about 13 miles of hike-and-bike trails built as part of the local greenway system. …
Austin seeks public input on how to improve walking, biking routes
By Zacharia Washington | communityimpact.com
Austin Public Works and the Austin Transportation Department launched the ATX Walk Bike Roll Public Input Map on Jan. 12 that allows residents to provide feedback on how to improve walking and biking routes in the city.
Katie Wettick, Austin Public Works’ Urban Trails Program manager, said the Urban Trails Plan is a continuation of an existing city plan from 2014. With the rapid growth in the city of Austin, transportation officials needed to change the plan to better accommodate residents regarding their transportation needs. The ATXWBR project consists of a combination of three separate plans, including the Urban Trails Plan, the Sidewalk Plan and the Bikeways Plan.
“We have a unified plan and serve as one network. It just seemed so natural to come …

I've been leading tours of the neighborhood bicycle and other facilities. We've had urban planners from Northwest Arkansas visiting Austin and Mueller to get an understanding of what has been done here.

Houston’s Memorial Park is divided by a railroad (predating the park), a high speed parkway, and (not visible) a freeway. Here, we see some attempts to connect across those barriers: a bike path under the tracks, a 2009 “living bridge” over the road, and land bridges being built. pic.twitter.com/knXM7AiXuI
