DAY 67: Amarillo, TX to Vega, TX: Cadillac Ranch
Thursday November 4, 2021, 43 miles (69 km) – Total so far: 2,557 miles (4,115 km) Oh – that Texas chip seal… the worst type of torturous pavement known to mankind. Plenty of it out here on little used sections of Route 66 / the frontage roads. Enough to knock your fillings loose, but fortunately I don’t have any. Can’t tell if I’m shaking from the ultra cold morning, or this road surface. But – once it warmed up a bit and we got back on regular pavement it was an exceptional day. …
DAY 68: Vega, TX to San Jon, NM: More Sad (but interesting) Ghost Towns
Friday November 5, 2021, 58 miles (93 km) – Total so far: 2,615 miles (4,208 km) The further west we go the more desolate the landscapes become. Even the ‘functioning’ towns seem like they’re in the process of failing, slowly but certainly. Some towns, like Glenrio at the Texas / New Mexico border have completely gone under. These were thriving places back in the heyday of Route 66, and now they’re just destroyed shells of their once vibrant past. It’s sad, but fascinating. …
