Misplaced Rain Optimism, Soaked Again
This week’s bike rides ran into a number of problems. From rain to pinch flats and back to rain I fell short of the miles and number of rides I planned. Plans sometimes are made to be broken. Rolling out on today’s bike ride at 8:47 AM I chose my Lynskey R300 bike rather than the Canyon Endurace bike I normally ride on Saturdays. I did my re-ride weather radar check and no rain in the area giving me a feeling that this bike ride would be dry. If only that optimism held true. The route was my usual Saturday one, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” with the hope of seeing other cyclists. By the 11:39 AM finish I saw other cyclists, rode in the rain on W. Lake Houston Parkway, stopped to wait for the heavy rain to stop, and ride the last mile on dry streets. No flat tire though.
I rode 33.73 miles pushing the week’s total to 130.38 miles and recording the first miles towards my 625 mile goal for October. With rain canceling yesterday’s ride I am behind the pace to reach that goal. Maybe next week’s weather will be more cooperative.
As the ride progressed the mostly cloudy sky started to turn to overcast but the clouds didn’t seem to hold rain until I began to ride west on FM 1960 where I saw heavier clouds hovering over Kingwood. Maybe if I left out the loop through Walden I might’ve beat the rain but I didn’t want to shorten the ride and lose the miles. I made the right hand turn onto W. Lake Houston Parkway (check the video) and was encouraged that to think the rain would hold off. But as I rode off the bridge into the Kings Harbor area I felt rain drops and by the time I reached a place to get out of the rain it was coming down soaking me. I waited about 15 minutes with the rain strengthening and waning and strengthening before slowing to a point I got back on my Lynskey. I hoped the trees would provide some shelter but the rain soaked them enough to continue the rain. I wondered if the cyclists who passed me at Kings River Drive avoided the rain, I don’t think so.
Weather summary: start 72 (99% humidity, 72 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 5 mph; finish 78 (94% humidity, 76 dew point), rain, wind NE 8 mph. A front might pass through early next week ending the rain for a few days.
I changed the GoPro Hero10 Black video resolution and it simplified my workflow for the video. The sound is muffled in a couple of clips. Not sure what is causing that. Maybe the wind setting for the microphone?
The bright side of the ride: Strava says I am the Local Legend on two segments.
