Thanks to more trails, better bikes and a rise of high-school interest, mountain biking has experienced a meteoric rise of popularity in the past decade. The pandemic added fuel to the fire.

Last summer, Cat Rainwater was overweight and going through menopause at an accelerated clip. That, on top of the stresses of pandemic lockdown, was leading to a mental health crisis.

“I was suicidal,” said Ms. Rainwater, 49, a mortgage underwriter based in Austin, Texas. “My sister was taking care of me and she said, ‘We have got to get you active.’”

She started trail running, until she injured her knee.

Pedals in the wind; bicyclists ride to remember the fallen

Abilene bicyclists joined riders worldwide Wednesday for the Ride of Silence, a short tour locally through the city’s center to remember those who have lost their lives on bicycles.

More than 30 began their route at McMurry University, the first time since 2019 after the global pandemic canceled the ride last spring. Cyclists wore reflective clothing, protective helmets and pedaled in silence as they were escorted by Abilene Police Department officers.
