Very strong wind from the South set the stage today. Smaller group than normal, scared off by the wind I think. Wind can create more dangerous conditions. For example, less control of the bikes. And closer riding, more overlapped wheels, and guttering in cross winds. Luckily there were no crashes. And it was a fast ride.

Day 18: Sanderson to Del Rio: Winds of Change (and Tire Issues)
Wednesday April 7, 2021, 119 miles (192 km) – Total so far: 1,354 miles (2,179 km) Today was such a great ride with the small caveat that I blew out 3 spokes (more on that later). Last night’s accommodations were fine, except that I didn’t notice the trains every 30 min or so until I tried to go to sleep. I did manage to get to sleep though. I was motivated to try and get to Del RIo today, so I awoke early in an effort to get on the road by dawn. I succeeded in the first goal of the day, hit the road 15 min or so before sunrise, and managed to catch the sun coming up just outside of Sanderson. It was a nice start. Also, to my surprise and bewilderment, there was no headwind this morning. Rather the wind was at my back, hallelujah!
Everything was going perfectly for a couple hours until I heard what sounded like a rock shoot out from under my tire, though something seemed wrong. I didn’t see any rocks that I would have gone over at the time. Nonetheless, I kept pedaling. 5 min or so later, the same …
