Waco-area news briefs: Southwest Waco park to reopen Thursday
Jerry Larson | wacotrib.com
The City of Waco Parks and Recreation Department will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday to celebrate the reopening of Trail Blazer Park, following a $640,000 improvement project at the site.
The 11-acre neighborhood park, located at 1101 Harris Creek Road, opened in 2013 as the primary trailhead for the Cotton Belt Trail. Neighborhood growth surrounding the park has since expanded, demonstrating the increased need for neighborhood park amenities to serve a wider range of families and uses.
New park amenities include a pavilion, water fountain, trail lighting, seating, soccer goals, a nine-hole family disc golf course, a shaded playground with enhanced accessibility and access improvements with connectivity to Stageline Drive. Additionally, a bicycle repair station was donated earlier this year by Bicycle World.
For information, contact the Parks and Recreation office at 254-750-5980.
City Hall to TxDOT: Plan to expand I-35 doesn’t do enough for those on foot, bikes, transit
By KXAN News |www.bizjournals.com
The proposal to expand and transform I-35 through downtown Austin has raised some questions. City leaders said it doesn’t do enough for walking, biking and transit.
“This highway, for so long, has not only been a physical barrier but a socioeconomic barrier too,†said Paige Ellis, District 8’s council member and chair of the mobility committee. “It’s very hard for people to get through different parts of Austin with the highway in the condition that it’s in right now, so I think people really want to see something that makes it easier to access education and jobs and I think this is our moment to get that right.â€

Sunday April 4, 2021, 72 miles (116 km) – Total so far: 525 miles (845 km) Left the hotel In Navasota around 9. Had to make a loop since the hotel was on the south bound frontage road. Since it was Easter many restaurants and stores were closed. Found a cafe in Anderson which has open and stopped an had breakfast. Most of the ride today was through the Sam Houston National Forest. I rode pass a control burn area which was …
Day 13 – Silsbee: Tunnel Vision
Monday April 5, 2021, 76 miles (123 km) – Total so far: 601 miles (968 km) I left the Double Lake Recreation Area campground a little before 9. I stopped and picked up some oil and rags in Cold Spring. For the last day my chain has been making some noise indicating that it needed to be oiled. I oiled then chain and wiped as much oil as I could off. It quieted the chain. I stopped for lunch in Shepard. Had a great bacon cheese burger lettuce wrap. Most of the ride today had …

Day 17: Marfa to Sanderson: Invited for Dinner
Tuesday April 6, 2021, 110 miles (177 km) – Total so far: 1,235 miles (1,987 km) The ride today was not overly eventful today, but the day did end with a very pleasant surprise when I was invited for dinner. Since changing time zones, the sun is now coming up after 7 am so that limits my early morning miles before the winds pick up. For today’s ride, the winds started nice but turned on me twice: once after Alpine and then again about 20 miles before Sanderson. Those periods can best be described as unrelenting and humorless. For other parts, though, the winds shifted behind me and the sun even ducked behind the clouds for a while. Add in the …

If u ever wonder why some ppl don’t ride in bike lanes, here’s 2 reasons why:
— Joey Pawlik (@joey_pawlik) April 6, 2021
a.) the door zone – there’s a good possibility that you can smash into a car door if someone opens 1 abruptly;
b.) a person’s parking job has their tire(s) hanging over into the already narrow bike lane pic.twitter.com/0htTgv89Xb
