Post First Vaccine Dose Bike Ride to FM 2100 and Back
When I got up this morning the weather didn’t look favorable for biking but as the morning wore on it changed. I decided to ride my Lynskey R300 bike today as I biked my “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. I should’ve rode my Canyon Endurace bike though since 3 years go today it arrived and I unboxed it. The post about the unboxing with pictures. But I didn’t think of that until after the 11:11 AM start and I was on the road. Tomorrow I will ride the Canyon bike. During the 3 years I biked 20,618 miles on it. This was the 3rd time biking this route in 2021.
Yesterday I received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at NGR Park. I arrived at the park entrances on South Main but there wasn’t a way to turn left because the police had all of the left turn lanes blocked. I drove to I-610, cut through a WhataBurger restaurant to get on the northbound side of South Main. From then no problems. At gate 16 I showed my QR code reservation and began the labyrinth drive to the first tent where the military person asked some questions and put a “1” on my windshield. The labyrinth resumed. I don’t think I have been to a place with so many orange traffic cones. The next, and last tent, administered the shot in less than 2 seconds. I drove forward for the 15 minute wait to be sure no reaction happened. None did. The only thing I have is a sore upper arm where the shot was made. I asked some of the military people where they were from. No one from Houston or Texas; but Tucson, North Carolina, Idaho, and South Carolina. It was very organized. There wasn’t any instructions to not exercise so I biked today.
I used my new for 2021 beginning of the ride which put the ride distance at 33.78 miles. This different starting route adds a little over a mile to the ride. Previously I wrote that I didn’t think I could reach my 400 road miles goal for February but maybe I was premature on that. I only need 47.3 miles to reach it and with 2 potential biking days left I could do it. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. I biked 159.96 miles this week so if I reach my goal it will be the first 200 mile week this year. For the month I rode 508.45 miles combining road and Zwift miles. Not too bad considering the February weather. With today’s miles 2021 YTD moved past 2020 YTD but only by 7 miles.
Today’s weather at the start and 1:54 PM finish: start 74 (77% humidity, 65.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 5 mph; finish 76 (70% humidity, 65.6 dew point), overcast, wind S 8 mph. I overdressed for the ride except when I went west over Lake Houston and the wind chill caused me to zip up my jacket. I wore shorts, long sleeve jersey, and windbreaker jacket.
My legs were not powerful today. I think yesterday used my reserve so today was a slow bike ride. My overall average speed didn’t get to 13 mph until the 24 or 25 mile point. While the wind wasn’t that strong I couldn’t increase my speed in the headwind. The return ride from FM 2100 was easier. I stopped at the church on Fairlake Lane for a few minutes of rest before tackling FM 1960 over Lake Houston. To show how the power was on the ride I spent 56% of the biking time in power zones 1 and 2. Significantly more than yesterday’s 41%. The bike ride summary from Golden Cheetah.
