Summer Arrives With Some Rain But Not A Problem
For the first day of summer my bike ride didn’t start the way I planned. Preparing to start at 8 AM after hearing thunder several times I wasn’t surprised when I looked outside to see it raining. The rain didn’t last long but the streets were wet with puddles. Waiting about 2 hours I began the bike ride at 9:57 AM on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX. I stuck with my original route, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden”, not expecting to see as many bikers as usual due to my late start and the earlier rain. This was the 8th time biking this route in 2020 and today I rode 32.13 miles. The week now totals 219.39 miles continuing my run of 200+ mile weeks. June totals 662.57 miles, 83% of the way to my goal. A summary of the rides in 2020.
Once I was on the Canyon the weather during the ride looked like this: start 75 (98% humidity, 74.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 4 mph. Finish 88 (72% humidity, 77.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind variable 7 mph. My arm sleeves today provided some warmth at the beginning of the ride before switching to sun protection as the ride progressed. Wind wasn’t much of a factor today except when I rode east over Lake Houston with nothing breaking it up. The humidity was noticeable compared to earlier in the week.
I did see a few cyclists during the bike ride and caught some in the video. The video shows how the weather cleared up for some blue sky.
I learned, again, that GoPro plastic mounts are brittle. The plastic mount attached to the Canyon’s stem started wobbling during the ride and inspecting it I found the mount cracked. Around the 24 mile mark I moved the GoPro to the mount under the Wahoo bolt computer. I was concerned about that position being too low but now that I see the video I don’t think it is a problem. I do have to strain to hear the GoPro beeps because belowthe computer turns the speaker away from me and is not as close. I remembered to change the GoPro’s screen orientation when I moved it so the videos wouldn’t be upside down.
My legs felt good during the ride putting out the power I wanted when I wanted it. I was able to improve my average speed to 14.1 mph which is not easy on this route due to the many stops and lack of long stretches of open biking.
