Bikes pedal back into favor in Galveston County amid pandemic, social distancing

They say you never forget how to ride a bike, and many residents around Galveston County are proving that adage to be true.
Bicycle sales are soaring across the county as people trying to find socially distant activities flood bike shops with orders and calls for service.
It’s a boon to a bicycle industry that for years had been waning as fewer people took interest in going outside, shop owners said.

Officers assigned to the Bike Patrol Team use specially equipped mountain bikes and are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of law enforcement bicycle patrol school. The bike patrol serves many purposes.
It is deployed for routine patrol, targeted enforcement (special crime issues), and for special events. It allows officers to easily interact with citizens since officers on a bike are more accessible than those in a car. Officers are also able to move quickly through parking lots and special events.
