First Outdoor Bike Ride of 2020
Today’s bike ride went north to Tavola, development east of I-69/US59 near Roman Forest. My previous 2 bike rides of 2020 took place indoor in Zwift’s virtual worlds. My plan “A” for biking today involved Zwift but as the time for the Zwift ride approached the weather outside improved.
As I began today’s bike ride at 12:21 PM the clouds from earlier in the morning broke and blue sky peeked through. To go with the blue sky the temperature moved up to 67.8 (my home weather station), above my cutoff threshold of 60. I gathered my clothes and got ready. To be safe, and comfortable, I wore shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, and a nylon jacket. With all of the sun I chose half finger gloves thinking the sun would keep my fingers warm. By the end of the ride at 3:06 PM the wind picked up to 13 mph from the NW versus the 4 mph at the start. The side wind on the way to Tavola did not hamper my efforts but I expected some resistance on the return trip to Kingwood. That resistance didn’t affect me that much as the direction rotated to the NW and my direction complimented it. Riding in the shade emphasized the wind chill and at times I wished for another jersey layer. I felt the chill after stopping at Rosewood Cemetery to visit my wife’s grave allowing time to cool down some and then getting the wind moving through my damp jacket and jersey.
Before the ride as I checked the Wahoo Elemnt computer and sensors the speed sensor failed to connect. I replaced the battery and all worked. I am glad I added the sensor check to my before ride routine.
Saturday I suspect waiting awhile to give the temperature time to warm up to the mid 60’s before biking.
I stopped on Bentwood Drive in Oakhurst for this picture. Plenty of blue sky.
