PowerPod Returns, Wind Returns, 200+ Mile Week Bike Ride
Got a later start than usual for a Saturday with wheels rolling at 10:54 AM. Thanks to longer rides earlier in the week I was able to go on the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route for 29.09 miles which put the week at 226.54 miles and June is now up to 484.02 miles, 61% of my goal for June. This is the 5th week in a row of 200+ miles.
The weather is moving back to the typical June: start 92 (65% humidity, 78 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 13 mph 20 mph gusts. Finish 95 (54% humidity, 76 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 12 mph 18 mph gusts. Around 10 miles it started to rain but not for long. By the time I found a place to get out of the rain it stopped. There was a threatening gray cloud to east and it moved around as the ride progressed. When I got back to Kingwood some of the streets had puddles near the curb. I sweated a lot more than from the rain.
The wind is back. The places where I was exposed, like riding west over Lake Houston, required holding onto the handle bars and pedaling hard.
I didn’t know what to expect at the beginning of the ride from the PowerPod after yesterday’s issues but it started up when I went through my usual pre-ride routine: press the PP start button, spin the front wheel to wake up the speed sensor, and spin the cranks to wake up the cadence sensor. Once the sensors are awake they pair with the PP. The power showed up on the Elemnt screen. As the ride progressed I felt the watts were too low but didn’t think of anything to correct that until mile 18 when I changed the tilt of PP elevating the wind port higher. The watts returned to what I expected after that for the rest of the ride.
One other cyclist crossed my route in Kingwood Greens as I was around mile 8 and exchanged hellos.
I accomplished my goal biking enough for 200+ miles for the week and finished the ride at 1:09 PM. Tomorrow is Sunday and Father’s Day so I will rest. I am ahead of the pace to reach my 800 mile goal for June biking every day so except for June 5th.
