Left Turn Headwind Whammy Bike Ride
I was sailing right along until I made the left turn from Gene Campbell Blvd onto FM 1314. Then Wham! The SE 20 mph headwind hit me and my leg power dropped off a cliff. This happened while I rode the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route today. I started riding at 11:38 AM after watching a race in Belgium on Flobikes. com.
Up to the 20 mile point when I made that turn onto FM 1314 the wind was my friend helping build up my average speed to 14.2 mph but on FM 1314 it slowly dropped down and by the end of the ride at 2:29 PM it was 13.3 mph. While getting the average speed to 14.2 I rode at 17 to 19 mph to overcome the slow speeds as I exit Kingwood and get to I-69/US59.
The blue sky from Tuesday disappeared to be replaced by an overcast sky as we prepare for rain late tonight and into Thursday. Weather while I biked: start 76 (84% humidity), overcast, wind S 16 mph. Finish 75 (85% humidity), overcast, wind SE 20 MPH. I swapped a regular long sleeve jersey for the thermal one I wore yesterday and kept the wind jacket above my shorts. I was comfortable even when I had the headwind and at the finish the jacket and jersey were wet from all of the sweat.
Thursday’ weather looks wet but it might dry out after noon so a bike ride might happen.
