No Rain As Wind Whips Across Grass Bike Ride
No rain during today’s bike ride. In fact it was sunny and warm while I rode the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route for 43.23 miles. I added a couple of extra streets to get the mileage to that level in order to almost reach 10% of my 700 mile goal for October with 69.46 miles so far. I left at 11:32 am after watching a race in Belgium, Binche-Chimay-Binche Mémorial Frank Vandenbroucke. Earlier the temperature dipped below 70 when I first got up. But the forecast said to expect upper 80’s.
Speaking of miles, my Canyon bike now shows 6037 miles since I bought it and started riding February 27th of this year. My year to date mileage is 6670 miles with the difference on other bikes. I am 130 miles away from reaching my goal for the year.
Weather during the bike ride: start 88 (77% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph. Finish 88 (66% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph.
The 13 mph wind made riding to the east and south difficult and the hardest section was on Old Atascocita Road east of FM 2100 where the land is flat with nothing to break the wind. Turning right onto Ramsey Road didn’t help and I fought the wind all the way to Stroker Road. At 23.3 miles into the ride I stopped and took these two photos.
The first photo looks east and you can see nothing to block the wind except the grass. The second photo looks to the south where the road goes with some trees where Stroker Road meets Ramsey Road. On Old Atascocita Road my power readings showed 200 to 300 watts almost all the way with similar numbers on Ramsey Road. The gate enters a grass farm field. To the west it looks the same.
Bicycling on Stroker Road put the wind behind me for most of the rest of the bike ride.
At the 30 mile point I stopped at the Huffman Chevron to rest, eat and refill my water bottle. I stayed about 25 minutes before setting off to the west on FM 1960. Sitting in the shade felt good and the wind that caused me trouble now helped cool me off.
Back in Kingwood my arrival coincided with Kingwood High School traffic so I stayed on the greenbelt along W. Lake Houston Parkway to cross Kingwood Drive and then onto the side streets to finish the bike ride at 3:13 pm. No need to wash the bike today!
Wednesday’s weather looks like a repeat of today. I plan on biking.
