Almost Drenched by Rain Bike Ride
I finished today’s bike ride just in time to avoid getting drenched. Biking on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route the sky looked gray with rain but I attributed that to my sunglasses and the lack of sunshine.. At one point I tipped my sunglasses down to check the sky without the gray lenses distorting the clouds color and it didn’t look rain was eminent.
Starting at 10:32 am I checked the weather radar and the rain was south of I-10 and i thought this would give me time to bicycle 30+ miles. The weather during the bike ride: start 78 (89% humidity), overcast, wind NE 7 mph. Finish 80 (92% humidity), light rain, wind calm. With the overcast sky and rain threatening the temperature stayed lower than normal for September. I managed to ride 35.0 miles. Last week was the first week since July 2nd that rode less than 200 miles. With all of the rain in the forecast this week I may not get 200 miles again. September stands at 251.64 miles, 36% of my 700 mile goal for the month.
Once I reached Tavola I stopped across the street from the community pool and club house to take these photos.
I almost took the second photo too soon and missed the cyclist crossing the intersection. Rain doesn’t seen to be in the sky at Tavola. To the south is where the threat lay.
Getting to Tavola I rode with a headwind but I still set a good pace. Anticipating the return ride back to Kingwood with a tailwind made the ride north less trouble.
Only one rest stop at the Stripes station on FM 1314. I thought I might not have enough water to get all the way home so I stopped for a refill. Good thing I didn’t stay there too long or I would have positioned myself to get caught in the rain.
From about the 24 mile point until the finish at 1:12 pm I rode in a light drizzle. Not enough to wet the street or add to my wetness. But around 2 miles to the finish the drizzle increased to the point that the screen on my Elemnt computer was obscured. I wiped it off a couple of times before getting to the end of the bike ride.
Not sure about Tuesday with rain in the forecast.
