Day 11: Stockdale to Gonzales: Farm Truck Hints!
Saturday April 14, 2018, 40 miles (64 km) – Total so far: 457 miles (735 km)
Throughout America in any small town it never varies. Look for where the pickup trucks are parked and you will find good food. Today was no exception as this knowledge led us after 12 miles of cycling to our breakfast at a small taco cafe in Nixon, Texas! We had good food, and superior conversation. We were a neat curiousity to all …

Johnson City, TX to Austin, TX: 49 miles
Wednesday April 11, 2018
Farewell Texas Hill Country! The Hill Country was beautifully scenic, but hard work too. I’m sure there are more climbs ahead, but the Hill Country climbs are the last of the bruisers. I’m curious about East Texas, as I’ve been in West Texas and the Hill Country before, but never East Texas.
I am camped in …
Austin, TX to LaGrange, TX: 73 miles
Thursday April 12, 2018
Today I have a very bad attitude.
There were many route changes during the first thirty miles today, which always slows things down some. At mid day the trail had me tour the state park from hell. I was envisioning a fourteen mile park road with a tree canopy and rolling hills. Unfortunately, the Bastrop State Park was burned out in a fire years ago and the …
LaGrange, TX to Navasota, TX: 64 miles
Friday April 13, 2018
Today was a cloudy day and rain look imminent throughout the afternoon, but it held off long enough for me to get my tent up at the Navasota, TX municipal RV Park before it started to sprinkle. Thunderstorms are forecasted for tonight, but I could give a care if it rains at night. If it gets too crazy tonight, I can take cover in the park’s bath and shower building close by.
The route today had two places to pick up food and water, so I traveled very …

Day 60: Sour Lake-Walter Umphrey State park
Thursday April 12, 2018, 58 miles (93 km) – Total so far: 1,996 miles (3,212 km)
I woke up in the church yard very wet today. In hindsight I should have put down my ground mat at least, but the morning dew was all over my sleeping bag and a few articles of clothing I failed to put away the previous night. I was a bit frustrated, but got myself together and started heading to Beaumont after some friendly interaction at the closest gas station for coffee. Kickstand bike shop was my first stop into town, and what a great place. I met Don there right away, and he helped me out with …
Day 61: Texas/Louisiana Boarder-Gran Chanier: Life at “Easy Chanier”
Friday April 13, 2018, 45 miles (72 km) – Total so far: 2,041 miles (3,285 km)
I slept very well considering my air bed lost its air in the middle of the night twice (it surely has a hole in it somewhere).
I had coffee and breakfast at the bait shop adjacent to the state park. It was pretty cheap and delicious for being at what appeared to be a convenience store, but you could tell all the food was made fresh in their back kitchen that morning.
Brutal cross wind today off the coast, now being much closer to …
