Tour of Corsicana: the Time Penalties, the Crash, the… Comeback?
Pedal Prose | www.youtube.com
This is a brief look at the 2018 Tour of Corsicana. Unfortunately, the ability to build out the scripted video and cover the entirety of the races was cut short by a need for medical attention. However, it was still a good experience. The rider who crashed into me even messaged me to apologize, and I thought that showed quite a bit of class.

Dockless bike-share pilot development rolls forward
by Caleb Pritchard | www.austinmonitor.com
More than a year after an aborted attempt to move into Austin without permission, several dockless bike-sharing companies have switched gears and are now patiently working with the Transportation Department as it develops a pilot program that could put the smartphone-activated two-wheelers on city streets by this summer. …

Day 27 – Camp Wood TX to Lost Maples State Park TX
Sunday March 25, 2018
A great night’s sleep without any noise, and with no flysheet on, a lovely view of the moon and the stars. Warm enough to sleep on top of the sleeping bag most of the night too. The Los Rios campground is one of the best yet, and Ryan and his family deserve success.
I had a leisurely breakfast in the communal pavilion with a real coffee (thanks Poppy!) and typed up the summary of the accommodation we have stayed at. We have found it really useful to get tips from cyclists ahead as to where they stayed.

Day 23 – Sanderson, TX to Comstock, TX: Hills and headwinds
Sunday March 25, 2018, 84 miles (135 km) – Total so far: 1,273 miles (2,049 km)
What a difference a day makes! Started out this morning with relatively warm temperatures and an overcast sky. Immediately we started climbing. Then we went down and back up all day long straight down US 90 right into a headwind. The terrain has changed from flat desert surrounded by mountains to many low hills and valleys. Instead of cactus there is an abundance of low trees – mesquite, creosote, etc.
The ride today was hard on everybody because of the distance and bad roads. I think Texas counties compete with each other to see who can spend the least on road maintenance. The pavement of choice seems to be chip seal – a layer of tar covered by …
Day 24 – Comstock, TX to Brackenville, TX: More headwinds – again
Monday March 26, 2018, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,347 miles (2,168 km)
The wind was howling all night at camp. This morning, we rode out onto the infamous chip seal road that is US 90 in this part of Texas. We went up and down low hills all day into a head wind. It was pretty much like yesterday. On the route we crossed over part of Amistad Reservoir, a huge impoundment near Del Rio on the Rio Grande. Lunch was in Del Rio where I had a Texas smoked brisket sandwich. That was THE highlight of the day. …

Day 23 – March 25 Sunday – Sanderson TX to Comstock TX: In nothing flat
Friday March 2, 2018, 82 miles (132 km) – Total so far: 1,259 miles (2,026 km)
We were worried about this day. It is a long day with a lot of climbing -2,200 feet. Even worse are the headwinds other years have experienced on this stretch. Two years ago, all but a handful of riders SAGed in, because the wind was too intense. We were ready for the worst, and it was a hard day, but the winds were very light. Of course, the heavy truck traffic, the lousy chipseal, and the hills all took their toll. We were tired enough at the end of a long day, but not totally spent. I expected Texas to be flat. But if you look at the elevation profile, you can see it was nothing but up and down all day. That got old. I miss Florida! …
Day 24 – March 26 Monday – Comstock TX to Ft. Clark Spring TX: I guess we are getting tough
Saturday March 3, 2018, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,334 miles (2,147 km)
It was looking bad this morning. Rain moving in, grey skies, and wind! After a long day yesterday, we were pretty grumpy about today’s prospects. The first 20 miles or so didn’t disappoint. So many hills, so much wind, and a misty rain that covered my fairing and made it hard to see. I just put my head down, kept my stops short, and pushed on. I didn’t want to get to camp late again. And I didn’t get in late. I got here around 4:00. Folks kept coming in until 7:30. …

Stephenville to Hamilton, TX: A day in the country
Monday March 26, 2018, 42 miles (68 km) – Total so far: 209 miles (336 km)
“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.†-Nelson Mandela
We did well getting up early this morning and were on the road before 8:00 am under cloudy skies. Our route took us north for a couple of miles before we turned south on FM Rd. 914 – a country back road.
For the first couple of miles we encountered rough milled pavement and a flurry of traffic. When we intersected another road going to Dublin, we lost most of the traffic and gained a smoother surface. There wasn’t much of a shoulder but that didn’t matter a whole lot as traffic was light.
We spent the morning and part of afternoon meandering up, down and …

I’m very apprehensive about the dumping of dockless bikes on our fair city, even though I'd like to see the vision & accessibility succeed. I’ve experienced more than a few metros where the bikes end up as clutter, junk, & obstacles. #BikeATX #Austin https://t.co/BTxsTqLO3f
