Cyclists push for passage of Houston Bike Plan
Adam Bennett | www.khou.com
HOUSTON – Bike advocates are pushing the city to make Houston’s streets safer after two cyclists died the week of the Super Bowl.
They want them to approve and adopt the Houston Bike Plan, a roughly $500 million long-range master plan finalized in June 2016 after months of community input.
Advocates say the plan got rolling after cyclist Chelsea Norman was killed in a hit-and-run in …

Day 32: Lobo, TX to Chispa, TX
Sunday February 12, 2017, 16 miles (26 km) – Total so far: 1,517 miles (2,441 km)
I woke up early this morning, and was soon on the road – one I would be following for the next 300 miles or so.
Pretty soon a strong wind started up, coming from the east as I was riding south. This meant i was dodging tumbleweeds and other debris being blown across the road. The wind speed increased sifnificantly, to the point where it was blowing the bike to the side of the road. According to Google it was gusting at 60 mph. I decided to …
Day 33: Chispa, TX to Nopal, TX
Monday February 13, 2017, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,573 miles (2,532 km)
My campsite by the bridge worked surprisingly well. There had been some thunderstorms during the night but relatively litle rain. It was a fairly quiet road so I wasnt woken up by traffic. By morning, the wind had almost entirely gone, so I soon started cycling.
The first place I came to was Valentine (a day early!). The sign called it a city, but with a population of 217 that seemed an exaggeration. …

Silsbee: ‘Tornadic’ weather
Saturday February 11, 2017
With both bikes reassembled, Peggy and I wound our way out of Houston Airport and headed for our first stop at Dayton. How many times have we heard that the weather is unseasonably this or that? Now it’s unseasonably hot, so we pedaled on for two days in temperatures hovering around 30 degrees. What with the jet lag and general lack of fitness it`s been no easy ride. The roads leading us towards the Southern Tier were flat, featureless and busy and it was a relief to arrive in Kountze where we connected with the ACA route. From there we rode to Silsbee to our first campsite and checked in. ‘Do you know we’re …
A TEXAS MONUMENT
by Bicycle Sport Shop | bicyclesportshop.wordpress.com
Former winners share their memories from one of the state’s most beloved events
Most anyone who’s raced the Pace Bend Road Race will likely agree that it’s one of those events where, if you had a memorable day, you’ll keep your race number.
You’ll tuck it away in a special place, like a sock drawer or a duffel bag, and eagerly wait to rediscover it one day. The number is a piece of paper, but it’s also a time capsule. You’ll rub the number’s waxy surface, and allow fond memories to wash over you.
The Bicycle Sport Shop-sponsored elite racing team, Super Squadra, has twice ridden to number saving worthy performances at Pace Bend. The team considers the event a Texas “Monument,†as important to …
