2016 Mellow Johnny’s Class Mountain Bike Race – Flat Creek Crossing Ranch
by TC www.turnincranks.com
My Cat2 40-49 mountain bike race video from the 2016 Mellow Johnny’s Classic held at Flat Creek Crossing Ranch near Johnson City, Texas.
The 2nd race of the Texas state 2016 series. Coming off of a 3rd place finish at Rocky Hill Ranch, I was gunning to improve my finishing position at a venue that suited my skills a bit more.
Flat Creek Crossing is a pretty technical trail, which suits me fine. There is one killer climb …
A perfect day for a bike ride around Huntsville
www.itemonline.com
More than 470 bicyclists took to the streets of Huntsville and Walker County last Saturday during the Huntsville Lions Club’s annual Raven’s Revenge Bike Ride, which is a BP MS 150 training ride.
The cyclists, some from as far away as England, had the choice of routes from 10 to 60 miles. Each route carried the cyclists through wooded hills of Huntsville that offered a great countryside experience.
The ride options went through Huntsville State Park, down Possum Walk Loop and through the rolling …
You Probably Won’t Die Biking These Six Houston Streets
By Meagan Flynn www.houstonpress.com
It would likely be a tough task to find a cyclist in Houston who thinks our city is “bike friendly.” You hear about bicyclists getting killed or injured in hit-and-runs somewhere in the Houston metro area pretty much every other week. Bike advocates say not to read the comments sections on any of those reports, because drivers will often say things like, “yeah, but it’s the bikers’ fault for not following the law!†Some appear to hate cyclists so much that they even started a petition to end the “illegal†Critical Mass social bike ride, saying, “Apparently, they consider it some kind of demonstration, but the only thing they demonstrate is selfish, childish, irresponsible, dangerous beghavior [sic] on our city streets.â€
So when we asked about a dozen cyclists to try to think of the safest streets to ride in Houston, it was …

Day 19: Navasota to La Grange
Tuesday March 8, 2016, 69 miles (111 km) – Total so far: 1,361 miles (2,190 km)
We had a tough ride today, fighting the wind, rain, and hilly terrain. Despite it all, we still managed to pedal almost 70 miles and reach our destination tonight, just before some of the bigger storms started rolling through.
This morning when we started out, we weren’t sure when exactly the rain was going to start, but decided to start out prepared with all our gear protected and rain gear on for when it decided to come. About a mile down the road the first shower came through. Throughout the morning the rain was off and on, but the sky cleared up nicely by the afternoon, and …

Day 21: La Grange to Bastrop
Thursday March 10, 2016, 44 miles (71 km) – Total so far: 1,405 miles (2,261 km)
Short day on the road today. It was a nice day for riding, and although it was supposed to rain today we didn’t get any while we were riding. The cloudy sky made it a little cooler than typical around here, but it was still a good day to be outside on the move. And after taking the day off the bike yesterday, we felt ready to go …

Day 5: Giddings, TX to Lexington, TX (Sonny’s RV Park)
Wednesday March 9, 2016, 24 miles (39 km) – Total so far: 176 miles (283 km)
I heard rain and thunder all night long. I am glad I booked the hotel. Rain just kept coming, and I realized that no matter how long I wait, it would be the same. I at some leftover pizza and took my muddy bike out in the rain. I had my blinkies and my hi vis rain jacket on. About 2 blocks from the hotel, the rain started monsooning. My left shoe was already full of water, so I knew this was going to be a very wet day. About 4 blocks from the hotel, I realized that the rain jacket is more like a wind jacket. My shirt underneath was soaking wet.
I continued on through the back roads toward Lexington. There were occasional cars that slowed down when passing by me so as not to splash me. Gotta love Texas. Rain rain rain rain. And oh wait…Headwinds!!! Yay!!! I kept pedaling, but sometimes would get down to 8mph in these headwinds on the flats. When the headwinds died down, I would be doing the same speed on my hills. After one long hill, I had a great downhill where I was reaching almost 30mph. I was a little scared because of the rain but exhilarating at the same time. At the start of the next hill, guess what happened?….Dirt Road again!!! I thought I was …

Day 6: Lexington, TX (Sonny’s RV Park) to Taylor, TX (Hotel)
Thursday March 10, 2016, 38 miles (61 km) – Total so far: 214 miles (344 km)
It was a nice night in the rec room of the RV park. I was able to fall asleep watching tv. I slept like a baby, while it continued to rain outside. It took a lot to wake up. I finally go t out of bed and started packing the bike. Where is my tent??!!? I must have left it over under the garage overhang near the office. I walked over there, and there it was! Thank goodness. I head out, and was immediately panged with the hungers. Across the highway is Subway, so I decided to stop in for breakfast/lunch. After loading up, I worked my way through town to 112 that would make my way through the country side toward Taylor. It was not raining any more, but misting the whole way. I thought it was going to be an “easy†day, but NOOOO! What attacked me were the longest and steepest rollers yet. At least the cars were courteous and gave …
