Our View: Improving local bike travel could be good for Lubbock and Tech
By A-J Editorial Board      lubbockonline.com
Lubbock isn’t a very bicycle-friendly city, but maybe it’s a good time to look into seeing what it would take to become one.
Bicycle travel is economical, a healthy activity for the riders and environmentally friendly. The problem is local cycling isn’t as safe or as convenient to the bicycle riders as it could be.
Texas Tech received an award from the League of American Bicyclists in 2013 for being a bronze bicycle-friendly university. Don’t look for the …

They each have a story.
“He would always put a smile on my face,” Rosa Pina, 7th grader at Veterans Middle School in Donna said.
They’re teenagers who have a personal connection with Juan Cardova, a fellow 15-year-old student whose life was cut short.
“He was such a great friend to me,” Deann Gonzalez, 8th grader said. “He helped me with my cheerleading.”
Cardova made such an impact on people’s lives that his friends and classmates spent their last vacation day before returning to school for the New Year to collect …
Houston’s Hike & Bike Trails Await!
By Michael Hardy      www.houstoniamag.com
On weekends, Fayza Elmostehi likes to load up her bike, then make the 20-minute drive from her Montrose apartment to the 500-acre Terry Hershey Park, which straddles both sides of Buffalo Bayou in west Houston. There, under a thick canopy of trees, Elmostehi, a social media manager for a tech company, speeds through hours-long rides along the park’s 10 miles of trails. The irony of driving her car so that she can ride her bike isn’t lost on her, and she often wishes there were a better way.
A better way is in fact on the way. Last year, the City of Houston launched the Bayou Greenways 2020 Project, whose goal is to build hike-and-bike trails along all of the city’s major bayous. Some of them, like Buffalo and Brays, already have trails, but even those …
Women on Wheels ride rural roads for exercise, fun
Story by FRED AFFLERBACH Photographs by WILLIAM TOROÂ Â Â Â Â Â kdhnews.com
On a day better suited for sailing than bicycle riding, heavy winds pushed 16 bikers into a low crouch. Heads down. Elbows in. Feet, calves and thighs pumping up and down. Calls of “car up†echoed down the line of riders pushing along Sparta Road.
It’s Sunday afternoon near Lake Belton and Women on Wheels, a Bell County group of avid cyclists, is rolling once again.
For more than five years, WOW members have gathered weekly for camaraderie, physical fitness and a hearty meal afterward at the Dead Fish Grill. Beginners are welcome. Advanced riders look out for …

Township invests in Greenway trail, parking
By Bridget Balch      www.yourhoustonnews.com
Spring Creek Greenway Trail
At its last meeting of the year, The Woodlands Township Board of Directors authorized a grant of $25,000 to the Bayou Land Conservancy for the Spring Creek Greenway and $72,000 to hire PGAL for a preliminary analysis of the planned transportation center and parking garage.
The Spring Creek Greenway is a 33-mile corridor that connects Harris and Montgomery counties and includes hiking trails, nature preserves, parks and wildlife habitats.
The BLC, which is a nonprofit organization that works primarily on wetland mitigation, has obtained about 80 percent of the land planned to make up the Greenway and is in the process of procuring and connecting the entire 12,000 acres.
The BLC approached the board in October to present to them the concept of the Spring Creek Greenway Trail, a planned 11-mile hiking and biking softscape pathway that will cost $175,000, and to ask for a …
Community Impact Sugar Land Bike Paths
By Damali Keith, Reporter      www.myfoxhouston.com

SUGAR LAND, Texas (FOX 26) – Getting around is getting easier in one neighboring community near Houston. It’s a story we’re working on in partnership with Community Impact Newspaper Sugar Land-Missouri City Edition. “We have about 30 miles of trails but they’re all little pieces. So they’re all like Cheetos on a picnic table, is the analogy I like to use. Great trails but they’re not connected. So our biggest goal is to connect these trails,†explain City of Sugar Land Right Of Way Services Manager Kimberly Terrell.
Residents approved a multi-million dollar 10-mile hiking and biking path project, which includes new bike lanes, trails and shared road ways. “We want to give our citizens the …
Concerns about overuse rise with another Zilker Park event
By Angie Beavin      kxan.com
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Following the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October and the Trail of Lights last month, Zilker Park is once again hosting a big event. This week a bicycle-racing event is taking place on the south side of Barton Springs Road. The race course and parking for the event take up a good chunk of the park land.
“[There’s] definitely some history with Austin,†Micah Rice said of the U.S.A. Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships being back at Zilker Park for the first time in more than 30 years. “We’re excited to be back here.â€
City officials determined the five-day event at the park is …
Singlespeed highlights windy first day of CX Nationals
www.usacycling.org
AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 7, 2015) – Riders claimed the first two titles of the 2015 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships on Wednesday at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, as men’s and women’s singlespeed ruled the event’s blustery first day of competition.
Justin Lindine (North Ogden, Utah/Team Redline) nabbed the men’s singlespeed top prize, clinching the Stars-and-Stripes jersey in 39:44. Isaac Neff (Madison, Wis./5Nines-Motorless Motion) and Tim Allen (Golden, Colo./Feedback Sports Racing) sprinted it out for silver, with Neff edging Allen by a second and finishing in 40:11.
“I had a blast,†said Lindine after the race. “It was my first singlespeed race, so I didn’t know what to expect. The course was super challenging, and I’m psyched that it turned out so well.â€
In the women’s singlespeed competition, it was Maureen Bruno Roy (Arlington, Mass.) with a 46:21 effort to …
