After a long season of racing bikes, it’s always refreshing to take some time and explore new territory on your bicycle. Last month Michelle and I took the RV down to the epic Texas hill country to check out the changing color of the fall leaves and to find some climbing. We accomplished both activites by staying in Vanderpool, TX which is adjacent to Lost Maples State Park and the quaint town of Utopia. The names certainly represent the hidden gems found in this south western area of Texas.
We headquartered our campsite at a local mom and pop owned property called, “A Little Piece of Heaven.†It did the name justice and was located a few miles off the main highway and smack in the middle of some beautiful routes we found on the Map My Ride website. Brushy Creek Regional Trail

The Brushy Creek Regional Trail is a great example of the trail builders working with the city to get more singletrack for biking cut into the Austin area.
The trail consists of multiple sections, including “Mulligan”, near the golf course, “Picnic” which is along the creek and “Deception”, the largest of the trails.

Meet at Leon Springs Park and Ride at 9:00 a.m. for a 31-mile ride with mostly gently rolling hills and a few more challenging hills on Amman Rd. The ride will take us through Fair Oaks Ranch and then on to Amman Road towards Boerne. We will stop at the Bear Moon Bakery on Main St. in Boerne. (Note: They ask you not to enter if your shoes have cleats that can scar their wooden floors.)  For those who wish to avoid the hills on Amman Road, but still want a good excuse to eat pastries at the bakery there is are two shorter options both with return with the longer route group: a 23 mile ride from the Park and Ride and a 15 mile ride which will start at 9:30 from the Fair Oaks Village strip Mall on…

(Jan. 10, 2014) — High winds, gusting to over 40 mph, threw an additional challenge at the competitors during Friday’s competition at the 2014 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships held at Valmont Bike Park in Boulder, Colo.
