Bicycling Goals For Richardson – 2014
Bike Friendly Richardson
What do you think the 2014 Bike Goals for the City of Richardson should be? Please post your ideas that would help improve biking in our city – and would cost little to nothing out of their budget. We’ll see if we can politely bring them to their attention.
I’ll start:
– Safe Passing Ordinance. They passed it in Plano and…
Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest in February
Texas Mountain Trail
The terrific folks at Desert Sports and Big Bend Ranch State Park are once again holding a GREAT mountain biking festival for beginners through expert riders, the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest. February 13-15, the trails in Big Bend Ranch State Park, Lajitas and Big Bend National Park will be explored with patient and skilled guides. The event is a benefit for the Big Bend Trails Alliance, which does important development and maintenance work on the region’s trails, so the…
Ray Porter
Ray truly lived the way most strive to, both on the bike and off the bike. Because of that, he inspired many of us to strive to be better; better riders, better friends, better family, and better to those in need. So now friends and family, let’s celebrate the life of one of the greatest men we were lucky enough to know in our own journeys.
We encourage you to ride your bike if you like. Be comfortable. If you’re wearing a kit, wear a kit. Just don’t have too much at the cash bar and…
The rise of curbs: Protected biking’s second act begins
Michael Andersen, Green Lane Project staff writer
Austin workers set modular precast curbs in place on Third Street downtown.
After five years of using parked cars and plastic posts to create the first generation of modern protected bike lanes, U.S. cities are starting to experiment with the next step: curbs.
In Chicago, Cyburn Avenue and State Street are likely to get the city’s first curb-separated bike lanes. In Seattle, the city has used two wholesale road reconstructions, on Linden Avenue and Broadway, as chances to install cement curb separations. In Austin, two blocks of 3rd Street downtown are now…
Walnut Creek Trail Closures for 2014
Austin Ridge Riders
As part of the ongoing partnership that ARR enjoys with the City of Austin, we are going to be doing all we can to help with the trail closures at Walnut Creek during the installation of the new paved multiuse path. However, rest assured, that these closures are TEMPORARY and absolutely necessary for the SAFETY of the trail users. Because there will be heavy equipment and laborers that are unfamiliar with trail users, it was in the best interest of both to temporarily close portions of the trail from January 4th until September 1. To that end, here are some things to consider with the trail closures:
1. Making sure that when a trail closure is put in place we abide by it. While we have a great relationship with the City we don’t want to give them a reason to question it;
2. Communicate the plan to as many people as possible. Let them know the…

Ray Porter Memorial: Race Against Cancer
Texas Mountain Bike Trails
Big Pig Racing will be hosting the 2nd annual Race Against Cancer!
This will be a 6-hour endurance mountain bike race on the beautiful East Texas trails inside Tyler State Park. We are also happy to announce that due to the strong impact of cancer in our community and the overwhelming success of last years event, we have founded the Big Pig Cancer Foundation to make all of this years donations tax deductible and help provide an avenue for supporting local families in their time of need.
In light of our communities recent loss, this year we have officially renamed the event in honor of local endurance, mountain bike legend Ray Porter who passed away on December 27th after being diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma on November 13, 2013. Ray and his wife Gina have been active supporters of the Dallas / Ft. Worth mountain bike community for many years and…
Never Stop Pushing
DORBA and the mountain biking community lost a hero with a large heart this week. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family as we mourn the loss of a good friend. If you were one of the many Ray Porter helped along the way you know his heart. If you had to compete against him you know what a phenomenal athlete he was and I doubt anyone minded losing to him. While there will be a significant void no one can fill, Ray would have told us to push on and make greater strides.
As I step down as DORBA President and Della Bird steps up, I ask each member to become more involved; to participate in trail work days, help with DORBA events, teach a skills or beginner clinic, encourage others to join and be a positive influence on the mountain bike community. As a member and President, my greatest joys have been giving back to the…
